How Do You Get to Machu Picchu?

To reach the Inca wonder spot, Machu Picchu, about 80 km northwest of Cusco. Placed on a mountain range above the Urubamba River valley, it was sacred to the Incas.

This post shares tips about Machu Picchu so you can make the most of your stop. No roads lead there by land. Air access, like small planes or choppers, is only for urgent cases. We go with two common ways:

Catch the train. From Ollantaytambo or Poroy station.

Hike the well-known Inca path.

Machu Picchu is found around 80 km northwest of Cusco on peaks over the Incas’ holy Urubamba valley. While options exist, the quick one for short-term folks is a full-day outing from Cusco, letting you see the world wonders in one go. No direct land routes since roads miss the spot. Airways are reserved for emergencies.

Trains run from Cusco area stations like Poroy (a 20-minute drive from the city) or Ollantaytambo (a 1.5-hour drive). PeruRail and Inca Rail offer services, with 2026 schedules starting early in the morning, around 5-6 a.m., to Aguas Calientes; the trip lasts 1.5-3 hours depending on the start point.

When’s the Best Time to See Machu Picchu?

The Cusco region, home to the modern wonder Machu Picchu, experiences two distinct weather seasons each year: the rainy season from November to March, and the dry season from April through October.

Bus option: 20-30 min uphill ride. Tickets are bought in town. The walk follows Hiram Bingham Highway switchbacks.

• It starts soft but builds intensity on steep bits.
