In these natural forms, nature creates the environmental conditions for greenhouses. These Maras salt flats are evaporating ponds. We can see all their glory from the viewpoint. The nearby Salinas de Maras (Salt flats Peru) dates back to the pre-Columbian period. After thousands of years, the Inca’s salt mines still produce with the same old techniques. There are 5,300 wells and 480 members belonging to 03 cooperatives in the valley. The output of Maras salt mines in Peru is between May and October, which is the dry season. The landscape here is awe-inspiring, especially when the light is lovely in the afternoon. Significant depression does not contain destroyed buildings, surrounded by a large covered terrace, which each level has its microclimates. It is a very atmospheric place, which, some claim, has mysterious power.
MARAS SALINERAS (Maras Salt Mines Peru) is in the western part of Cusco, 3300 meters above sea level. (10,824 feet). About 7 kilometers. Maras salt ponds have a porous natural rock formation that filters water into the earth’s interior. The Salineras of Maras salt mines consist of 3,000 small swimming pools.
Note: The vehicles to use “see the photo in prices.”
No one is exactly sure what was happening at Moray during Inca times. The three agricultural coliseums have irrigation canals and several terraces for farm experimentation. Each level is thought to have a different microclimate and may have been used to acclimate various crops.
Maras is a striking salt extraction complex. You can access it via a bridle path. The locals still remove salt from the pans as they have for thousands of years. Families pass the pans down from generation to generation as they continue this labor-intensive operation.
You will likely pass through here on the way to Moray. Getting to each location is a bit difficult. The easiest way is by car from Cusco or Urubamba to Moray. You can also hike to Maras from Urubamba, which takes several hours. Ask locals for the best route. And yet another way is via horseback or mountain bike from Cuzco or Urubamba.
