Who This Trek Is Best For

This six-day route is designed for adventurous travelers who want to explore one of Peru’s most remote and spectacular mountain regions. It’s ideal for hikers who enjoy multi-day expeditions, high-altitude landscapes, and camping in wild, open environments.

This route is especially well-suited for those who:

  • Have previous trekking experience and feel comfortable hiking several consecutive days
  • Are looking for a quieter alternative to more crowded routes
  • Want to experience authentic Andean communities and traditional mountain life
  • Appreciate dramatic scenery, glacial lakes, and high mountain passes

While you don’t need to be a professional athlete, a good level of fitness and proper acclimatization are important. This trek rewards preparation with an unforgettable journey through some of the most sacred and untouched landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.

Why You’ll Love This 6-Day High-Andes Adventure

The 6-Day Ausangate Trek offers a deeper and more unhurried experience of the Peruvian Andes. With an extra day on the trail, you’ll have more time to acclimatize, explore remote valleys, and truly absorb the dramatic beauty of this sacred mountain region.

The slower rhythm allows you to connect more closely with the landscape, the silence of the high mountains, and the traditional Quechua communities that still call this region home.

This trek isn’t just about crossing high passes. Itinerary

Detailed 6-Day Ausangate Trek Itinerary

The pre-trek briefing about Ausangate Trek 6 Days is held in the lobby of the trekkers’ hotel. After the tour guide explains the itinerary, the adventurers ask about the trek or other expedition details. Briefings: Prepare one day before your hike starts, at around 17:00.

DAY 1

Cusco – Tinqui – Upis

Our expert guide will pick you up from your hotel at 6:00 a.m. to start the trip to Tinki, heading southwest from Cusco.

The drive south from Cusco is very picturesque as it passes through various colonial and Inca towns with a changing panorama typical of the Peruvian Andes.

We will continue our 6-day Ausangate Trek to the Andean community of Tinqui and meet our team of muleteers and pack donkeys. We load all the mountain equipment for the Ausangate Trek for 6 days and begin our adventure through the Andes of Peru. Our first hiking trail took approximately 3 hours at a moderate pace to adapt to the elevations of the Andes gradually.

The second segment of the walk takes 2 hours to reach UPIS to have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the thermal baths of Upis; it is essential to bring a bathing suit. “Being inside the hot springs is an incredible feeling for a remote adventure.”

DAY 2

Upis to Puca Qocha

The nights are cold, like every morning. We recommend wearing warm clothing for low temperatures; it helps a lot for the comfort of each hiker.

Today is one of the big days from Ausangate Trek 6 Days because we will climb our first pass of ARAPA (4850 meters or 15,915 feet). We will climb the mountain little by little until we conquer it to have two great panoramic views of contrast between the Andes, glaciers, snow-capped mountains, flora, and fauna of the Andean zone.

From the top and bottom of the trail, we have three areas of lagoons of different shades, such as reddish, green, and turquoise. For souvenir photos, count the headwaters of the great Amazonian rivers.

DAY 3

Puca Qocha to Ausangate Qocha (Rainbow optional extension) - Huchuy Pinaya

A few years ago, the Rainbow optional extension became famous; we will visit it on an extra 1.5-hour walk, taking the additional path until we reach the top of Rainbow Mountain at 5050 meters (16,568 feet) during the Ausangate Trek 6 Days. The best is that we hike the additional circuit towards the rainbow.

We will return to the Ananta hiking trail after appreciating the colorful mountains. From Ananta, we continue our walk for about 3 hours until we reach Ausangate Qocha at 4,700 meters (15,420 feet), then cross the Palomani Pass to our base camp, Huchuy Pinaya. Today’s outdoor activities vary from appreciating or observing the great snow-capped Ausangate, such as the colorful Vinicunca trail, the Red Valley, or the pass with its descent to the camp; truly remote places are ideal for de-stressing from the routine and for finding ourselves on nature walks through picturesque landscapes.

DAY 4

Huchuy Pinaya – Jampa

We continue our Ausangate Trek through the Andes, ascending to the Jampa Pass (5,150 meters or 16,919 feet). Throughout the hike, we accompany Mother Nature’s silence in this part of the world with an inspiring landscape view of the unique panoramas of Ausangate.

We find herds and herds of alpacas in their natural habitat, running towards the frozen mountains and inter-Andean valleys; the higher the Andean camelids are, the happier they are, laughing and jumping because it is their natural habitat. We can capture excellent panoramic views of the landscapes with alpacas of different types and styles.

From the Jampa pass, we descend the mountain for approximately 02 hours until we reach Pampacancha (4050 meters) to continue our hiking adventure on the uphill path of the Andes Mountain for 03 hours until we reach the base camp of Jampa (4300 meters).

DAY 5

Jampa to Pacchanta

We are nearing the end of our 6 Days Ausangate Hike vacation through the Peruvian Andes. We begin hiking for an average of 1 hour, arriving near the base and at the top of the mountain glacier.

The Ausangate glacier is one of the essential mountains in South America because it is part of the source of freshwater that passes its waters through the Andes of Peru and other South American countries. For this reason, reaching this point in Ausangate is satisfactory for the whole group to take a couple of photographs.

During the afternoon, we will descend for approximately 5 hours towards and around the Qomer Qocha lagoon to conquer the last outdoor camp of Pacchanta. Pacchanta is an Andean community with attractive hot springs where you can dip in and relax your muscles after several days of trekking through the Andes.

Pacchanta Details

  • Lowest elevation: 4,250 meters (13,943 feet)
  • Highest elevation: 4,500 meters (14,764 feet)

The last section of hiking is only 3 hours until you reach Tinqui. In Tinqui, we have lunch, say goodbye to our team of horses, and return to Cusco after having enjoyed this incredible walk of the Ausangate Trek 6 Days. Thank you for exploring the Andes with our team.
