Inca Jungle Adventure and Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Most families with adventurous children face an impossible dilemma when planning a 4-day trek in Peru: almost every major multi-day trek requires participants to be at least 12-14 years old. Salkantay Trek 4 Days requires age 13+, Lares + Rainbow 4 Days requires age 14+, and Classic Inca Trail 4 Days requires age 12+. Other options involve compromises: Machu Picchu Express 4 Days includes no trekking, while the Short Inca Trail 2 Days feels too short for travelers seeking a complete adventure.

The Inca Jungle Adventure + Short Inca Trail 4 Days HYBRID Combo solves that problem. It is the ONLY 4-day trekking combo in our catalog that combines the official Ministry of Culture Short Inca Trail permit with three completely different trekking environments while welcoming children from age 7.

Five reasons why this HYBRID combo is unique:

1. The ONLY family-friendly 4-day trekking combo (Age 7+). Every comparable 4-day trek in our catalog requires participants to be 12-14 years old. This itinerary welcomes children from age 7 thanks to its lower maximum altitude (2,814 m), comfortable hotel accommodations, moderate terrain, and family-oriented pace.

2. Three completely different trekking experiences in one itinerary. Experience Day 1 tropical jungle through coffee, fruit and coca plantations, Day 2 cloud forest and the Llactapata section of the Salkantay route, and Day 3 the official permit-only Inca Trail with Chachabamba, Wiñaywayna and the Sun Gate. Few itineraries offer such ecological and archaeological diversity in only four days.

3. Two unforgettable Machu Picchu viewpoints. Enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu from Llactapata on Day 2, then experience the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku) arrival on Day 3 before entering Machu Picchu itself on Day 4.

4. Cocalmayo Hot Springs and hotel comfort included. Unlike high-altitude trekking itineraries that immediately climb above 4,600 m, this adventure begins in the warm jungle valleys, includes one hour at the famous Cocalmayo Hot Springs, and provides an overnight stay at Santa Teresa Plaza Hotel on the first night.

5. A unique Day 3 approach to the Inca Trail. Instead of boarding the traditional train to Km 104, you’ll walk 6 km along the Urubamba River from Aguas Calientes to Km 104 before beginning the official 10 km Short Inca Trail. This creates an exclusive 16 km trekking day unavailable on any other itinerary in our catalog.

From $465 USD per person (based on 10 travelers) · 4 Days / 3 Nights · Private Tour · Operating March-January (closed in February) · Minimum age: 7 years.

Why We Don’t Offer Airport Pickup

Because the tour begins with a 05:00 AM hotel pickup, flight arrival times are too unpredictable. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2–3 days before departure to acclimatize and enjoy optional city tours before the trek.

About the Short Inca Trail Permit

  • Issued by Peru’s Ministry of Culture
  • Limited daily availability
  • Non-transferable
  • Book at least 4–6 months in advance
  • Trail closed every February

Permits are processed immediately after your deposit is received.

Family Preparation Tips

  • Train with regular walks for 6–8 weeks before departure
  • Use well-broken-in hiking shoes
  • Spend 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco
  • The guide adjusts the pace to the slowest participant
  • Frequent rest stops are included throughout the trek

Important: Day 3 includes approximately 16 km of hiking and is physically demanding, even for experienced hikers.

Salkantay 4-Day ($511, age 13+): Day 1 Salkantay Pass 4,630m + Cocalmayo, Day 2 SAME Llactapata route, Day 3 Short IT, adults 13+ only.

This HYBRID ($465, age 7+): Day 1 jungle (1,640m instead of glacier), Day 2 SAME Llactapata, Day 3 Short IT with UNIQUE 16 km walking, age 7+ family-friendly.

Choose Salkantay if: glacier priority + adults 13+. Choose this HYBRID if: family 7+ + jungle Day 1 + $46 savings.

All other Short IT combos use PeruRail Expedition 83P from Ollantaytambo to Km 104 (~12 km / 7h total).

This HYBRID uses UNIQUE walking logistics:

  • 05:30 AM depart Aguas Calientes
  • Walk 6 km upstream to Km 104 (semi-flat riverside, ~1h30)
  • 10 km Short IT hike
  • Total ~16 km / 7 hours

Why: since Day 2 ends at Aguas Calientes, walking directly to Km 104 makes logistical sense.

Advantages: beautiful early walk + bird watching + unique adventure + no train coordination.

Disadvantages: longer + more demanding + very early start.

Circuit 3B automatic (Inca Trail permit).

CHALLENGING — especially Day 3:

  • Day 1: 5.5 km jungle (MODERATE)
  • Day 2: 10.2 km Lucmabamba + Llactapata (MODERATE-DEMANDING)
  • Day 3: 16 km / 7 hours (DEMANDING — longest day)
  • Day 4: light walking MP

Total: ~32 km hiking across 3 days.

Family preparation: Day 3 is DEMANDING even for adults. Consider:

  • Cardio training 6-8 weeks
  • Broken-in hiking shoes
  • Children physical readiness — 16 km challenging for kids 7-10

Alternative for less physical: Huchuy Qosqo 3-Day + Short IT ($459, age 7+, max 13 km Day 1).
