Who This Extension Is Ideal For
Lake Titicaca can be visited year-round, and each season offers a different perspective on the Andean highlands. Because the lake sits at over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level, the climate is generally cool and dry, with strong sunshine during the day and colder temperatures at night.
The dry season, from May to October, is considered the most popular time to travel from Cusco to Lake Titicaca. During these months, the skies are usually clear, and the landscapes of the Andes look especially dramatic. It is an excellent time for photography and for enjoying the panoramic views along the route from Cusco to Puno.
The rainy season, from November to April, brings greener scenery across the highlands and fewer visitors to many destinations. While occasional rain showers may occur, mornings are often clear, and the lake takes on a beautiful reflective quality. For travelers who prefer quieter experiences and lush landscapes, this season can also be a rewarding time to visit.
No matter when you choose to travel, the cultural experiences around Lake Titicaca remain the highlight of the journey. Visiting the floating islands of Uros and the traditional community of Taquile offers a unique opportunity to learn about the traditions and daily life of the people who have lived around the lake for centuries.
Travel Tip
Because of the high altitude, temperatures can change quickly throughout the day. It is always a good idea to bring layers of clothing, sun protection, and a light jacket, even during the warmer months.
Traveling from Cusco to Lake Titicaca is an adventure through the heart of the Peruvian Andes. The distance between Cusco and Puno is approximately 390 kilometers (about 240 miles), and the journey crosses the vast highlands known as the Altiplano, where dramatic landscapes, traditional villages, and archaeological sites can be found along the route.
One of the most convenient ways to make this journey is by joining a guided overland tour. This option allows travelers to explore important cultural sites on the way instead of simply traveling between cities. Stops such as the ancient burial towers of Sillustani or the mysterious site of Aramu Muru add depth to the experience and provide insight into the region’s history and traditions.
Another option is to travel by tourist bus, which connects Cusco and Puno with several scenic stops along the way. Some travelers also choose to fly between Cusco and Juliaca Airport, near Puno, the fastest way to reach Lake Titicaca. However, flying does not offer the same opportunity to experience the landscapes and cultural sites of the Andean highlands.
For travelers who enjoy discovering more of the region along the way, the overland journey from Cusco to Lake Titicaca offers a unique perspective of southern Peru and creates a more complete travel experience.
Distance and Travel Time
Traveling from Cusco to Lake Titicaca is a rewarding experience, but a little preparation can make the journey even more enjoyable. Because the route crosses the Andean highlands, travelers will encounter high altitudes, changing weather conditions, and unique cultural environments along the way.
One of the most important things to keep in mind is the altitude. Both Cusco and Lake Titicaca sit at high elevations, so it is a good idea to spend a couple of days in Cusco before starting the journey. This helps your body adjust and makes the experience more comfortable.
The weather in the Andes can also change quickly during the day. Mornings may be sunny and warm, while evenings tend to be much cooler, especially near the lake. Bringing layers of clothing is the best way to stay comfortable throughout the trip.
Sun protection is another important consideration. At high altitudes, the sunlight can feel much stronger than at sea level. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will help protect you while exploring outdoor sites and enjoying the boat excursion on Lake Titicaca.
Finally, take time to appreciate the cultural traditions of the communities you visit. Places like the Uros floating islands and Taquile Island are home to people who have preserved their customs and way of life for generations. Respecting local traditions and supporting community crafts can make your visit even more meaningful.

After visiting and walking through Sillustanis, we return to Cusco to take the southern vehicle route to tour the second circuit of the day.
Once we arrive at the natural rock formation of Aramu Muru, we will walk through different places to observe the shapes of gigantic anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, such as the portal carved in the Inca ancestral period. Speed boat excursion on Lake Titicaca, exploring the islands of Uros and Taquile
We start the time at 7:30
The main port is located near the center of the city of Puno. In the morning, we pick up clients from their hotels to go to the port of Lake Titicaca to board our private boat and start surfing the waves of Lake Titicaca.
The idea of the speedboat is to stay longer to visit the floating islands of the Uros and Taquile. It is impressive to walk through the islands of the Uros, like walking on a giant mattress of water. Taquile is a solid island, and we must climb a steep slope, so we recommend walking to adapt to the heights.
We descend from the island through the other port so that the descent walk is pleasant, with impressive panoramic views of Lake Titicaca in conjunction with the island. After all this travel, we return to Puno in our boat.
NOTE: Wear warm or thermal clothing; even though we have sunny weather, it can be pretty cold because in the Andes, “the weather is changeable at any time of the day.”
