Colca Full Day Tour: If you want a unique and unforgettable adventure in Peru, take a full-day tour of Colca Canyon. This beautiful natural wonder is one of the world’s deepest canyons. It offers impressive views of the Andean landscape.

Overview

What to Expect During the Day

This day trip is perfect if you want to experience Colca Canyon without staying overnight. It’s an early start, but the reward is a full day surrounded by some of the most impressive landscapes in southern Peru.

As the journey begins from Arequipa or Puno, you’ll travel through wide open highland scenery, passing small Andean villages and herds of alpacas along the way. Little by little, the terrain changes, and the views become more dramatic as you approach the canyon.

One of the most memorable moments of the day is arriving at Cruz del Condor. With a bit of luck, you’ll see Andean condors gliding above the canyon walls, riding the morning thermals. It’s a quiet but powerful sight.

Throughout the trip, you’ll also:

  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Andes and nearby volcanoes
  • See pre-Inca agricultural terraces still used today
  • Visit traditional villages such as Chivay, Yanque, and Maca
  • Travel alongside sections of the Colca River deep in the valley
  • Experience the changing landscapes of the high Andes in just one day

Even though it’s a full-day excursion, the pace allows you to take in the scenery, stretch your legs at key stops, and appreciate the culture and nature of the region without feeling rushed.

Departure Times

  • From Puno: 03:00 a.m.
  • From Arequipa: 03:50 a.m.

For travelers who prefer a slower schedule with more time inside the canyon, there is also a two-day option available.

The Journey Through the Andes

The journey to Colca Canyon is much more than reaching a viewpoint — it’s a gradual immersion into the landscapes of the high Andes. Whether departing from Puno or Arequipa, the route itself becomes part of the experience, offering wide-open plains, volcanic peaks, traditional villages, and wildlife along the way.

  • A brief stop at a local restaurant along the route, where you can use the facilities, enjoy a warm cup of coca tea, and have breakfast if you wish.
  • Scenic viewpoints overlooking the Colca Valley, where you’ll see impressive agricultural terraces that have shaped the canyon’s landscape for centuries.
  • Cruz del Condor, the most iconic lookout point in the canyon and the best place to observe Andean condors soaring above the cliffs.
  • When time allows, additional scenic stops may include:
    • Patapampa Volcano Viewpoint, offering panoramic views of surrounding snow-capped peaks.
    • Aguada Blanca National Reserve (Pampas Cañahuas), where you may spot wild vicuñas grazing across the high-altitude plains.

Route from Puno

Departing from Puno, the drive begins across the Altiplano, passing through Mañazo and the peaceful waters of Laguna Lagunillas. As the road climbs higher, you’ll notice the scenery shifting from open highland plains to dramatic mountain views.

The route continues toward Patapampa, the highest point of the journey, before descending into the Colca Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through Chivay and traditional villages such as Yanque, Coporaque, and Maca before arriving at the iconic Cruz del Condor viewpoint.

After visiting the canyon, the journey continues toward Arequipa.

Route from Arequipa

From Arequipa, the road gradually ascends into the Andean highlands, with a stop near Patapampa, where sweeping views of surrounding volcanoes stretch across the horizon.

The descent into the valley leads through Chivay and the traditional towns of Yanque, Coporaque, and Maca before reaching Cruz del Condor, the most famous lookout point in the canyon.

At the end of the visit, the return journey follows the road toward Puno.

Important: This full-day service operates as a round-trip from your departure city. Travelers starting in Arequipa return to Arequipa, and those departing from Puno return to Puno.

Travel Time from Arequipa and Puno

The duration of the journey varies depending on your departure city:

  • From Puno to Cruz del Condor: approximately 5 hours (338 km / 210 miles)
  • From Arequipa to Cruz del Condor: approximately 4 hours (207 km / 129 miles)

Please note that travel times may vary slightly depending on road conditions, weather, and scheduled stops along the way.

Altitude and Elevation During the Tour

This tour takes place at high altitude, so it’s helpful to be aware of the elevation changes throughout the day.

  • Departure from Puno: 3,827 m (12,555 ft.)
  • Departure from Arequipa: 2,335 m (7,660 ft.)
  • Patapampa Volcano Viewpoint: 4,469 m (14,662 ft.) – the highest point reached during the journey
  • Chivay (Colca Valley): 3,663 m (12,017 ft.)
