Colca Canyon Day Trip from Arequipa or Puno

The tour runs one of two ways, and you choose which fits your itinerary: round-trip from Arequipa, or one-way between Puno and Arequipa with Colca Canyon built into the crossing.

Hotel pickup (03:00 a.m. from Puno / 03:50 a.m. from Arequipa). Your guide and driver collect you directly from your hotel. Departures are deliberately early — the goal is to reach Cruz del Condor while the morning thermals are strongest, since that’s when condors are most active and most likely to fly close to the viewpoint. Expect the first hour or two of the drive to be in darkness.

Route via Puno — through the Altiplano. Leaving Puno, the road crosses the open Altiplano through Mañazo and past Laguna Lagunillas, where the flat highland scenery gives an early sense of scale before the terrain starts climbing. This stretch is quiet and mostly empty — herds of alpaca, distant peaks, very little traffic.

Breakfast and coca tea stop: Both routes include a short stop at a local restaurant along the way, where you can use the restroom, warm up with a cup of coca tea (helpful at altitude), and have breakfast if you’d like. Meals are at your own expense and discretion — your guide can point you toward a good option at each stop, but there’s no set restaurant you’re required to use.

Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve (Pampas Cañahuas): As the road gains altitude, it cuts through this high-plain reserve, home to wild vicuñas — the smaller, undomesticated cousin of the llama and alpaca, and the source of the world’s finest natural wool. Sightings aren’t guaranteed but are common in the early morning light.

Patapampa Pass — 4,910 m (16,109 ft). This is the highest point of the entire day, and the highest most travelers will stand at during their whole Peru trip outside of a multi-day trek. The viewpoint here, sometimes called the “Roof of the Andes,” opens onto a full panorama of volcanic peaks — Ampato, Sabancaya, and Hualca Hualca — often dusted with snow. The air is noticeably thin; your guide will keep the stop brief and encourage slow movements.

Descent into the Colca Valley — Chivay and the traditional villages. From Patapampa, the road drops toward Chivay (3,600 m), the main town of the Colca Valley, then continues through Yanque, Coporaque, and Maca — small agricultural communities built on pre-Inca stone terracing that’s still farmed today. These villages give the trip its cultural weight; it’s not just a canyon and a bird, it’s a living valley.

Cruz del Condor Viewpoint — 3,800 m (12,467 ft). The main event. This clifftop lookout is the most reliable spot in Peru to watch wild Andean condors — birds with a wingspan that can exceed three meters — rise out of the canyon on the morning thermals, often gliding close enough to see clearly without binoculars. You’ll have time here to walk along the viewpoint, take photos, and simply watch. Sightings are strongest between roughly 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. and depend on weather, so while they’re highly likely, they’re never 100% guaranteed — this is wildlife, not a show.

Return journey: From Cruz del Condor, the route continues back through Chivay and Patapampa toward your finishing city. If your trip started in Puno, you’ll end in Arequipa (or the reverse) — a genuine transfer, not a loop. If you have an evening flight, let your guide know in advance so the drop-off can be arranged directly at the Arequipa or Juliaca airport instead of your hotel.
