Choquequirao Hiking Data:

  1. Along the Choquequirao route, there are many stones of all sizes! That’s why hiking poles and hiking shoes with ankle support are recommended. We descend and ascend through the Apurmac Canyon twice in three days.
  2. In Marampata, it is cold because of the Padreyoc mountain range. It is advisable to bring a light sweater and a hiking down jacket to not carry much weight in the backpack! The less weight you have! Most enjoyable hike.
  3. Choquequirao walk cataloging level! It is challenging due to the inclination of the hiking trail, going up and down the Apurmac Canyon, and the hot and dry temperature during the day.
  4. In the Andes of Peru, it gets dark at 6 in the afternoon! At approximately 5:30 a.m., dawn breaks!

DAY 2

Chiquisca – Choquequirao Guided Tour

Our activities start at 4 in the morning, and we have breakfast at 4:30 to begin our true adventure through the Andes. Today is our day to conquer Choquequirao.

We descend for 1 hour towards the Apurmac River to start the ascent to the mountain by the zigzagging trail for 5 hours to Marampata. From Marampata, we have an hour and a half of walking between small climbs and descents to enter the cloud forest until we reach the ruins of Choquequirao, and then return to the Marampata Lodge to take a hot shower and have dinner with enough carbohydrates.

Why start early? Our main reason is to cover the trekking section from Chiquisca to Marampa in one day and have a guided tour of Choquequirao. The remoteness of the trekking area makes our experience in the Andes memorable.

  • For this day, bring a light snack! In the middle of the mountain or above Santa Rosa, you run out of energy, so recharge your energy with your snacks and continue the adventure.

At 04:30, we descend the beautiful Apurmac Canyon until we reach the banks of the Apurimac River for an average of 3 and a half hours. We ascend the mountain road from Plaza Rosalina until we reach Chiquisca for our local breakfast. During the walk, it is vital to have some energy bars or special preparations in sachets to cover the calories we burn. You also have to bring ENOUGH WATER. “There are local stores in strategic places, such as water from streams in certain sectors of the circuit (take water purification tablets).”

At 10:00, we start the last three and a half hours of hiking up the mountain until we reach Capuliyoc. Once we get to Capuliyoc, we thank the entire hiking trail, the Choquequirao temple, and Mother Nature for having this great hike through the Andes of the APURÍMAC CANYON.

We have lunch in Capuliyoc, and at approximately 3:30 p.m., we begin the land trip back to Cusco. Thank you very much for exploring Choquequirao Trek 3 Days; we are sure they will return to the Cusco, Peru-South America region for more treks.

Suppose you are very fit and prepared to walk for very long days. Without a doubt, this is the hiking circuit in Peru for you. We start the trek in Capuliyoc, conquer Choquequirao, and return to Capuliyoc on a 3-day adventure, taking basic lodging services and essential local food for trekkers.

The tour is recommended for children over eight years old who enjoy hiking outdoors.

Older adults wishing to do the Choquequirao trek should be physically healthy. It is not recommended if they have heart problems.

The Choquequirao trek in Peru is one of the most famous trips to Cusco. This trekking route takes four days and covers 62 kilometers in outward and return sections.

Yes, the Choquequirao trek is an accessible route for the public. However, it is advisable to hire a tour agency as it includes everything you need: a Local professional guide, camping, food, entrance fees, etc.

The route is of moderate to great difficulty. It is recommended to be in good physical condition. However, with effort, anyone can complete the hike.

Yes, we offer the 8-day trek that includes visiting the archaeological site of Choquequirao and the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

The entrance to Choquequirao costs 60 soles for adults, 30 for university students, and 25 for children. These tickets are already included in the tour.

Don’t forget to bring a sleeping bag, poncho in case of rain, comfortable sports clothes (that can withstand low temperatures), snacks, fruits, batteries, personal utensils, and objects you think are necessary.

The tour has wide availability. It is recommended to make the purchase weeks in advance. This way, you can better organize the route.

The weather during the trek is warm and temperate, ranging from 8 C to 24 C. Rains can occur any day of the year, especially in January, February, and March.

On your own, Choquequirao is reached by Cusco or Abancay; the first destination is the town of Cachora; you ascend on foot to Choquequirao. The hike is one day, and the return is the same way.

Hiring your Choquequirao trek with Kondor Path Tours is the safest and most convenient way because they take care of all the trip’s logistics, and we must enjoy this exciting hike.

Choquequirao is 3,033 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.).

Choquequirao houses Inca constructions as impressive as Machu Picchu, such as:

  • The Main Plaza,
  • The Colcas,
  • The Inca Cemetery,
  • The Kallankas,
  • The Ushnu,
  • Los Andenes, etc.

Choquequirao is still excavating; it is estimated that, to date, only 30% of the original Inca precinct has been restored.

Because of its geographical position, Choquequirao has a “temperate-warm” climate due to the Apurimac Canyon, alternating with cold temperatures at night; the average annual temperature is 17ºC.

For this trek, it is necessary to acclimatize in the city of Cusco one or two days before starting the hike; rest as much as possible, eat a little, eat a little, eat a little, and drink plenty of fluids.

It is also necessary to be in good physical and mental condition; this is a trek where the level of demand is higher than the Inca Trail or Salkantay.

Because Choquequirao has a “warm-temperate” climate, it is unlikely to suffer from altitude sickness, or “Soroche.” Still, if this happens, we can drink coca leaf tea, which is highly known for its healing and relaxing properties.

The Choquequirao tour is a unique and unforgettable experience; since it is a challenging, fantastic, and natural adventure, we will know the ancestral wonders of the Incas, accompanied by the satisfaction of feeling fulfilled at the culmination of this hike. To have an even more pleasant and safe experience, do not forget to contact Waman Adventures, a prestigious company from Cusco that will guide you in every moment of this incredible journey, along with quality and certified professionals that will make your trip the most memorable experience of your life.

We used Kondor Path for 5 different tours. My husband, 21 year old daughter and I used Kondor Path for several tours. First of all, every tour you book with them is private. Loved that! They went at our pace for every tour. If we wanted to skip something, add something, go slower or faster, they accommodated us. We did the alternate Ollyantaytambo tour, Super Sacred Valley tour, 1/2 day Cusco tour, Machu Picchu guide and a two day tour from Puno to Arequipa with a stop at the Colca Canyon. Our guides were Wilfredo, Odon and Andres and our drivers were Anibal and Raul. All 5 of these men were excellent. The drivers did such a good job and Anibal was excellent at helping me at some of the stops that involved climbing (I am a giant klutz!) All three of our guides were knowledgeable and taught us so much about the locations, Incas, and pre-Incas. I had a bit of an oxygen issue when we passed 16,000 feet and Andres was so good about helping me back to the car and Raul got us down in altitude quickly and safely. Our daughter had a massive nose bleed at MP and Odon helped her to get it stopped. If you find yourself in Peru, do yourself a favor and use Kondor Path!

Lares 1 day hike was amazing I did the 1 day Lares Trek private tour with Kondor Path Tours and liked it a lot. They picked me up from my hostel and hours later we arrived at Lares Town to have some breakfast from locals which was really delicious. Later during the hike we met even more locals which gives you a feeling of how they are living. My guide explained everything so well and it was so interesting. As requested I got really good Vegetarian food. Thanks to my guide Alfredo Santacruz and the driver I felt comfortable during the whole trip. Thank you for this amazing experience!!

Great Short Inca Trail Experience Just finished the short Inca Trail hike with Kondor Path tours. An excellent experience from beginning to end. Responded quickly, everything well organized, our guide Bonette was fabulous. Set the perfect pace for our family, knowledgeable, considerate. The trail itself is amazing- entering Machu Picchu through the sun gate at the end. Spectacular scenery.

Amazing trip thanks to Fredi! Our tour was fantastic. We did the 2 day Salkantay trek, spent the first day hiking the Salkantay trail and got to take a horse part of the way. The lunch was great and everything was thought through ahead of time by our guide, Fredi. Fredi was truly the highlight of our trip! An amazing guide and so fun to spend time with- we learned a ton from him, felt safe, and had a blast. I would definitely book with Kondor Tours again for a chance to spend time with Fredi on another adventure. Some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen- truly and unforgettable adventure

Must do tour We did the trip to Machu Picchu with them and the horse ride up to rainbow mountain… we never do tours because we don’t like to spend money unnecessarily… this was so worth it it’s a private tour and the logistics of the train the ride there the bus the entrance and all the times to just fit in is hard to schedule also the time of departure to go back … it was so worth it.. the guides are amazing and you learn way more about their culture and they speak great English.. you learn so much on just the rides… also they bring oxygen and the roads are pretty rough so unlike the trouble of scheduling and getting up so early and the rough roads and altitude sickness you just lay down and sleep on the trip instead of a bunch of people on a bus jsut the ride alone is worth it … this is a no brainer to do ….and once again I never spend money on excursions or tours they also are first to book the tours so you get the much sought after circuit 2

Wonderul site, great tour operator and excellent guide We had an evening flight so wanted to do something during the first half of the day, really glad we picked this half-day tour of the Sillustani ruins. The tour agent (Kondor Path Tours) was very flexible about our pickup time and dropoff options, so that really helped. We were able to arrange a later pickup in the morning that included all our luggage and then they dropped us off at the Juliaca airport after the tour. But the Sillustani towers themselves are a real treat to see and learn about all their history. The site itself is very serene and beautiful, with the lake in the background from the main viewpoint. Our tour guide (Richy/Ricardo) was excellent and very helpful and knowledgeable. He gave us not only the ancient history of Sillustani and the adjoining areas, but also a more contemporary history of Peru and the Puno region I have to add that he went over and above by even helping us to check our bags in at JUL airport!

Maras and Moray + Pachamanca Easily the best tour experience I had during my trip to Peru. I highly recommend Kondor Tours as the customer service is top-notch. James responded to my queries almost instantly each time and was very helpful. We were even treated to a can of cusquenia beer each when we visited the office! Our guide Alfredo was absolutely amazing and we were fortunate to have him as our guide for the tour. He is very passionate about his job and shared so much valuable information with us. He has a very candid character and we were very comfortable throughout! I highly recommend requesting for him as your guide (the best we had while touring Peru for 3 weeks). Also, I would say opting in for and additional traditional peruvian pachamanca meal experience must not be missed. The community people were very warm and gracious hosts and it is eye opening to witness the preparation of such a traditional feast normally done only for special occasions like weddings. We even had time for dancing! Two thumbs up for sure!

3-day Choquequirao Trek We took a three-day private group trek to Choquequirao as a family of five. Kondor Path Tours organized a pick-up and drop-off in Urubamba instead of Cusco and did an extra stop at the Saywhite archeological site. Everything went very smoothly during the entire trip, meals and accommodation were as expected or better. The trek itself is quite demanding (particularly in three days), but the nature/ views/ Choquequirao/ dearth of tourists largely compensate. Anyway, we were looking for a physical challenge! Our guide Oron was great. Explaining, motivating, solving potential problems/ demands. We would definitely recommend Kondor Path Tours.
