A Moonstone Trek for five days is a mesmerizing expedition that takes you through the breathtaking landscapes, rich flora and fauna, and hidden gems of the wilderness.
Overview
What to Expect on the Moonstone Trek
The Moonstone Trek is a quiet and less-traveled route through the Peruvian Andes that combines history, raw mountain landscapes, and an authentic cultural experience. Over five days, you’ll walk ancient paths surrounded by dramatic valleys, high mountain passes, and impressive Inca archaeological sites that few visitors ever see.
Unlike the classic Inca Trail, this trek offers a more remote and peaceful atmosphere. You’ll camp in open landscapes under clear Andean skies, cross high-altitude passes with panoramic views, and gradually descend toward the Sacred Valley before visiting Machu Picchu on the final day.
Expect a challenging but rewarding journey. The terrain ranges from rolling highland plains to steep mountain ascents, making it ideal for hikers seeking something adventurous and different — without the crowds.
Is This 5-Day Trek Right for You?
This trek is a great choice for travelers who enjoy off-the-beaten-path experiences and want a deeper connection with nature and history. If you prefer quieter trails, expansive mountain scenery, and archaeological sites beyond the typical tourist routes, the Moonstone Trek is an excellent alternative.
It’s best suited for hikers with moderate fitness who are comfortable walking several hours per day at high altitudes. While previous trekking experience is helpful, it’s not mandatory — determination and a good sense of adventure are more important.
If you are looking for a classic route with heavy traffic and fixed departure limitations, the Inca Trail might be better. But if you want something more exclusive, scenic, and culturally immersive, this route offers a truly unique Andean journey.
5-Day Route Overview
Day 1: Cusco – Quillarumiyoc – Molinuyoc – Chillipahua
Day 2: Chillipahua – Accoccasa Pass – Chancachuco
Day 3: Chancachuco – Wayrac Punku – Inca Quarry
Day 4: Inca Quarry – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
Day 5: Machu Picchu Guided Visit – Return to Cusco
Highlights of the Experience
One of the most memorable moments of the trek is reaching the high mountain passes, where sweeping views of the Andean landscape stretch in every direction. The silence and scale of the scenery create a powerful sense of connection with nature.
You’ll also visit remarkable Inca sites along the way, including the impressive quarry believed to have supplied stones for Ollantaytambo. These archaeological remains offer a fascinating look into Inca engineering and daily life.
Another highlight is the transition from remote mountain camps to the lush cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu. Ending the adventure with a guided visit to the citadel makes the journey feel complete — combining physical achievement, history, and one of the most iconic landscapes in South America.

Chinchero to Urquillos in May sunshine!
On a clear sunny May day, we took a walk from Chinchero (after the weaving demo) to Urquillos, via Pic Poc Falls. Beautiful downhill hike, made all the better because we were in great company with our Kondor Path Guide. Perfect English! We were collected in Ollantaytambo dead on time. The car was large and comfy. We had the most glorious day in the Sacred Valley!

Tiwanaku Visit
We are Americans who did a day tour out of Puno, Peru into Bolivia to visit Tiwanaku and Puma Punku. Kondor Path does an excellent job, and communicated very promptly, and we had many issues to figure out. We were denied a Bolivian visa from the consult in Lima for no stated reason and therefore thought our visit to Bolivia would not happen. Kondor Path connected us with one of their specialists in Puno, Peru and was able to secure a Bolivian visa for us, making a long-held dream come true for me. I do not believe we would have been able to secure the visas on our own. Admittedly, there was a slight language barrier with our guides, but easily overcome with translation apps and the ability to speak basic Spanish, which I do. Our guides were with us the whole time and instructed us through all processes, including crossing the border. The service was exemplary, and I would highly recommend it. Thank you, Kondor Path for making it all possible.

perfect trip to the Rainbow Mountains and the Red Valley with Kondor Path Tours!
Usually, I don't write many reviews, however, this one is more than deserved: We just returned from a horse riding tour to the Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley (near Cusco, Peru), which was one of the most fascinating and best organized tours we've ever done! Fantastic views on such an unusual and beautifol landscape, a very friendly and helpful guide, easy horse riding through the mountainside and finally, a tasty lunch to round up the experience :) In particular, I would like to stress out two more positive aspects: 1) One day prior to the tour, Kondor Path Tours proactively sent us a reminder e-mail with all necessary information, as well as pick-up time, etc. 2) There were just 2 of us and no other tourists in the gorup, so - instead of cancelling due to the lack of participants like some other tour operaters would have done - we got essentially a private tour with a personal guide with from-door-to-door (our hotel in Cusco) service. To sum it up, if you want to go to the Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley (we definitely recommend doing both!) from Cusco - and particularly, if you are preferring a convenient horse ride - we definitely recommend doing it with Kondor Path Tours, which you definitely won't regret!

A wonderful 4 day private tour with Kondor Path Tours, Cusco, Peru.
I travelled to Peru with my daughter and granddaughter. We had booked a 4 day private tour with Kondor Path Tours and was not disappointed. Our tour with KPT included: Day 1 Cusco City Tour + the Cusco Cathedral and Coricancha Day 2: Tour the Sacred Valley—PM Train to Machu Picchu Pueblo Day 3: AM, guided tour in Machu Picchu; PM, Return to Cusco Day 4: Rainbow Mt. by Horse Our guide, Odon, and driver, Julio, could not have been more knowledgeable and accommodating. They were always on-time and Odon didn't just share the history of the region, but provided context by sharing some of his life, too. I highly recommend KPT. You won't be disappointed.

So glad we chose Kondor Path
Our family of four did a 2 day tour which included Chinchero, Moray and the Maras salt ponds, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu. It was amazing and well organized! It was wonderful to have a guide. Alfredo was personable and knew his stuff. I appreciated his knowledge of the sites and also the little things he told us about different parts of the culture and what was happening when we walked through the towns. It was just our family so it was a nice, personalized experience. I know some people are comfortable doing everything on their own, but for me, going to a completely new place, it was a relief to leave the details to someone else and have someone to tell us the how and where of all the different tickets for entry, bus, and train. It made the trip worry-free.

Unforgettable Experience on the Super Sacred Valley Tour!
The Super Sacred Valley Tour was an incredible experience from start to finish. Boneth, our tour guide, was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the history and culture of the region. She brought the sites to life with her engaging storytelling and made sure everyone in the group felt included and informed. Mario, our driver, was professional, punctual, and made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the day. His smooth driving and warm demeanor added to the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere of the tour. Together, Boneth and Mario made a fantastic team. The tour was well-organized, ran on time, and covered breathtaking sites with plenty of opportunities for photos and exploration. I highly recommend the Super Sacred Valley Tour to anyone visiting the area — it was a highlight of our trip!

Best Cusco Perú Tour Company
We had 3 jam packed days with Tour Guide Odon & Driver Julio from Kondor Tours. Super Sacred Valley 1 Day Tour was totally amazing !! We got to see over 10 different places and it was impossible to pick a favorite. Odon taught us so much history and interesting facts about the area the day flew by. Our very talented, experienced driver Julio got us safely to each destination. Our next tour day was for my 60th Birthday at Rainbow Mountain. When I called to change the horseback riding to dirt bikes James was there to make everything happen. Such a kind, patient customer service representative , probably the best I have ever encountered. Once again Julio got us safely to our destination & on time. Once again Odon made our day the best it could ever be. He got us promptly to the dirt bikes and walked us up the short but challenging climb to the top. We had breathtaking views and amazing company. Odon never let us down being there for all our needs, and a great photographer as well. We felt as if we were out in an adventure with a good friend, as well as an amazing tour guide. Machu Picchu was a long and exhausting day but totally worth the time. Once again Julio got us safely to our destination. Odon was there to make another amazing adventure come true. I felt so safe and comfortable knowing that he would be getting us to the train on time as well as the bus ride to Machu Picchu. Odon once again didn’t disappoint, his knowledge, kindness and helping us every step of this journey was unforgettable. We give 5 ⭐️’s & Totally Recommend Kondor Tours Cusco - if you book a trip tell James April from NJ says Hi and ask for the best tour guide on the planet Odon & his faithful driver Julio, You won’t be disappointed!!!
