DESCRIPTION OF THE GUIDED TOUR
At 9 in the morning, we started the vehicular trip towards the excursion from Moray to Maras. We begin the walk with a guided visit to the ruins of Moray, walking its Inca trails that then start the official walk to the town of Maras, which goes through the pre-Hispanic colonial path. The panoramic views are incredible with every step we take until we reach the village of Maras.
The town of Maras has beautiful colonial mansions with stately portals and heraldic shields that give them family ancestry from colonial times to the present day. We continue the walk towards the salt mines of Maras; we have incredible views in the distance before reaching the salt flats. Moras Moray is known as the balcony of the Sacred Valley for having great views of the Andes, glaciers, and mountainous valleys of the Sacred Valley.
The Maras Salt Mines trek is 3,000 meters above sea level and approximately 1 hour and a half from Cusco. These are salt mines, and their exploitation is as old as the Tahuantinsuyo. Located on the hillside, the Maras salt mines, on terraces or platforms, are filled by subway water that flows down the creek. The origin of the source of the water is still a mystery.
The terraces of Moray are agricultural terraces built in depressions or gigantic natural pits. These terraces are superimposed concentrically, taking the form of a massive Inca amphitheater. The most profound deck is 150 m, and its average height is 1.80 m.
This Moray Maras Hike tour is perfect for those who want to contact the Inca history and learn more about the local communities.
