Why you will love the Rainbow Mountain Peru by Horseback experience.
Join our special horseback riding tour to Rainbow Mountain in Vinicunca. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and amazing views.
Your Kondor Path tour guide and vehicle will collect you from your Cusco accommodation at 5:20 AM. Get ready for a scenic drive south through the beautiful countryside. You’ll pass small towns like Urcos and Cusipata and see the first light over the mountains. (Tip: Bring a warm jacket—it’s chilly in the high Andes pre-dawn!)
After ~3 hours on the road, we reach the horseback riding start point, a village near the base of Rainbow Mountain. Here you’ll meet the local horsemen and your Andean horse for the day. Take a few minutes to stretch, use facilities, and gear up (don’t forget your sunblock and water). When the explorers are ready, you’ll mount up and begin the ride to Vinicunca!
Enjoy a spectacular 5 km ride (about 50-60 minutes) up the trail toward Vinicunca. The landscape is characterized by a moderate ascent and breathtaking Andes vistas in all directions. No crowds at this hour—often you’ll have the scenery to yourself aside from a few other riders and trekkers. Your horse will follow the lead of the muleteer walking beside you. Breathe in the crisp Andes air and take photos of the wild llamas, alpacas, and colorful hills along the way. (Riding a horse requires no special skill; just sit comfortably in the saddle and enjoy!)
Horses can go most of the way, but the last stretch is too steep for riding. You’ll dismount at a point just below the Rainbow Mountain Pass. From here, hike roughly 10-15 minutes up a well-marked path to reach the famous viewpoint. This short hike is a bit challenging due to the altitude, but your guide will adjust their pace to suit you. As you crest the pass, the full view of Rainbow Mountain’s painted peaks unfolds before you—a gratifying sight! Congratulations, you made it!
Stay at the summit for around 20 to 45 minutes. Look at the rainbow-striped mountain (each color band made by different minerals) and enjoy the wide 360° views of the Andes. To one side, you might glimpse the Red Valley; to the other, the towering Ausangate glacier. This is a perfect time to snap photos or simply sit and appreciate the moment. Your guide can help point out the best photo spots and any visible wildlife. (Keep an eye out for any distant vicuñas, alpacas, llamas, or condors.)
After enjoying the peak, begin your hiking descent. The return downhill is on foot for roughly 3.5 km (2.1 miles). It takes most people about 30–45 minutes to walk back down to the parking area. If you feel tired or have knee problems, you can choose to ride a horse for an extra fee. However, most travelers find the walk down easy and beautiful. As you walk, you will see the landscape from a new angle. This is a great opportunity to spot things you may have missed before.
Back at Llactoq, say goodbye to your horse and local horsemen. We’ll then drive you a short distance to a local restaurant (or a picnic site) for lunch. Enjoy a well-deserved meal with Peruvian dishes in Cusipata. This buffet offers a variety of options, including quinoa salad, Andean trout, pasta, vegetables, and more. Eating at altitude makes the food taste even more delicious! This is also a good opportunity to use a restroom and relax after the Rainbow Mountain adventure.
With hearts (and stomachs) full, we board our private Kondor Path transport and begin the 2-hour drive back to Cusco from Cusipata. Please sit back and relax as we travel through the beautiful Pitumarca valley and then rejoin the highway. You can even take a nap after the early start and all the excitement.
We will arrive back in Cusco in the mid-afternoon (approximately between 3:30 and 4:00 PM). You’ll be dropped off at your Cusco hotel doorstep, ending the tour. Congratulations—you’ve just conquered Rainbow Mountain! Despite it being a long day, you’ll have incredible memories and photos to cherish from this journey. The rest of the evening is free for you to relax in Cusco (perhaps celebrate with a Pisco sour or a hot coca tea).
Note: Times are approximate and can vary based on weather, trail conditions, and your pace. Being a private tour, we have flexibility. If you’d like to stay longer for photos, we can usually accommodate the schedule. You can also leave a bit later in the morning if you prefer. Your comfort and enjoyment are our priority.
For this adventure, one horse is assigned per client, plus a local muleteer (male or female).

Rainbow Mountain Peru by Horseback
Please have a light breakfast before the 5:20 AM pickup, or bring snacks. You may also want extra drinks or personal snacks. Tips for the guide, driver, or horsemen are optional and at your discretion. If you want to ride a horse, the cost is approximately USD 25. This fee is paid directly to the horse handler. We recommend bringing your reusable water bottle. We will provide some water, but it’s a good idea to bring your own. This helps you stay hydrated at high altitudes.
It is impossible to appropriately dress for a day of horseback riding in Rainbow Mountain Peru. When you leave Cusco at around 5:00 (05:30), you’ll want to wear a few layers of gloves, as you’ll likely be freezing.
When the bus dropped us off at the beginning of the ride, we were still shaking. When we saw people wearing shorts and T-shirts, we thought they were crazy. Later in the day, the sun set. The heat made the skin feel hot. The travelers, who had worn shorts, changed into more suitable clothing. It was about our visit, but the travelers had a snowstorm the day before, so anything was possible.
Visiting Rainbow Mountain on Horseback means facing numerous weather changes. It can be cold in the morning and very sunny at noon. Proper gear will ensure you stay comfortable:
Physical Preparation: Remember that Rainbow Mountain’s summit is over 5,000 m (16,400 ft) above sea level. We highly recommend you spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400 m altitude) beforehand to acclimatize. This helps your body adjust. It will enhance your Rainbow Mountain experience and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Take it easy with alcohol and heavy exercise when you arrive. Stay hydrated and think about drinking coca tea. It is a local remedy for altitude. Our guide will also carry oxygen and monitor your condition during the trek. Most people enjoy this tour. However, if you experience headaches or dizziness, please inform your guide immediately. We can then pause or descend as needed.

Not at all! No riding experience is required for this tour. The horses are tame and well-trained, making them suitable for beginners. Each horse is led by a dedicated handler walking alongside, so you won’t be on your own. The ride is at a calm walking pace. Your guide and the muleteers will assist you in getting on/off the horse, ensuring you feel comfortable. This tour is suitable for first-time riders and children. The recommended minimum age is about 7 years old.
The horseback ride is relatively easy and does not need much effort—you sit for almost an hour and enjoy the view. The main challenge is the altitude and the final 15-minute hike. That last part to the top is steep and high up. It can be breathless and tough, even for fit hikers. The altitude makes it more challenging. We recommend taking it slow, pausing as needed—reaching the top is not a race! Overall, compared to the standard 2–to 3-hour hike, the horseback tour is significantly less strenuous. Expect a moderate effort: you’ll still walk downhill for 30-40 minutes, which can tire the legs a little, but it’s mostly gentle. If you can walk for an hour and climb a few flights of stairs, you should be able to handle this tour. Our guides will be there to support you and make adjustments if anyone in the group is struggling.
It’s possible to experience mild symptoms at the top due to the high altitude (5,100 m). Common symptoms include being out of breath, experiencing a slight headache, or feeling dizzy. We strongly advise acclimatizing in Cusco for a couple of days before going to Rainbow Mountain. During the tour, we mitigate risks by ascending gradually (driving then riding up) and carrying oxygen. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol the night before helps. In our experience, most people enjoy the horseback tour. The physical effort is less than hiking. This makes it easier to adjust to the altitude. If you feel unwell at any point, please inform your guide immediately. We can always pause or even turn back if needed—your health is a priority. Severe altitude sickness is rare on a well-planned tour with acclimatization. However, it’s essential to listen to your body.
(Fun fact: Locals often chew coca leaves or candy to help with altitude. You might give it a try—it’s an age-old tradition in the Andes.)
Yes, safety is our top concern. We work with the local community that cares for the horses. The animals are treated well and are only taken out for one trip each day. They also get plenty of rest. They are used to the trail. They never have to run or carry more than they can handle. Each horse carries one average-sized person. You will always have a guide or horse handler nearby. We also provide helmets for riders. For you, the most “dangerous” aspect is the altitude, which we’ve addressed above. The trail itself is wide and safe—no cliff-edge riding or anything like that. We run this tour often, and our guides are very experienced. They ensure our guests are safe and have a good time. Rest assured, you’re in good hands (and hooves)!
Absolutely—families are welcome. As mentioned, children aged seven and up can enjoy the horse ride (accompanied by a parent/guardian). Kids often love the adventure of riding a horse and seeing the llamas around. For seniors or less mobile travelers, this tour is an excellent option since the horses do most of the work. We’ve had travelers in their 60s and 70s successfully reach Rainbow Mountain by horse. The key is to be aware of altitude effects. As long as you have acclimatized and are in good health, age is not a significant barrier. You should be able to sit on a horse and walk a little. Our team will be there to assist anyone who needs a helping hand during the hike portion. If you have specific concerns, such as knee problems related to downhill skiing, please let us know. We can arrange exceptional help, such as a horse for going down or extra support. We want adventurers of all ages to experience this wonder!
We run the tour rain or shine, but safety is our top priority. If there are severe weather warnings (such as heavy snow or thunderstorms), we may adjust the departure time. Light rain or a few snowflurries often happen in the mountains. In these cases, we provide you with rain ponchos and proceed with caution. Usually, the weather at dawn can look iffy, but then it clears up by late morning. Our guides are very familiar with local weather patterns and will make the call in your best interest. If rescheduling isn’t possible and weather prevents access, we provide appropriate refunds or alternative options. Tip: Always bring a rain jacket and dress in layers, just in case. And remember, a little mist can add a magical beauty to Rainbow Mountain. Every type of weather has its charm!
