The Ancascocha Hike may be the perfect option for you. This 5-day trek takes you through beautiful landscapes, old ruins, and local villages. It ends with the amazing view of Machu Picchu.

Overview

What to Expect on the 5 Day Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu

The 5-day hike takes you on an extended high-altitude trek. You will experience a multi-day wilderness immersion, pass remote Andean villages, and explore ancient Inca ruins before arriving at Machu Picchu.

Why Choose the 5-Day Version of the Ancascocha Trek?

The 5 day Ancascocha Trek is the most complete and extended version of this remote route to Machu Picchu. Designed as a true high-altitude Andean expedition, it offers deeper wilderness immersion and the longest time spent trekking through isolated mountain terrain.

Unlike shorter Ancascocha itineraries, this extended route prioritizes gradual altitude adaptation and sustained exposure above 4,000 meters. The additional day allows for a more progressive acclimatization schedule, reducing physical strain while enhancing the overall mountain experience.

This version is ideal for travelers who:

  • Want the longest Ancascocha trek available
  • Prefer an extended alternative to the Classic Inca Trail
  • Seek a remote, multi-day wilderness trek in Peru
  • Value slow travel and immersive high-altitude trekking

Rather than compressing the experience, the 5-day route unfolds at a natural rhythm. You spend more time crossing wide Andean valleys, navigating high mountain passes, and camping in quiet alpine landscapes far from busier trekking corridors.

For those searching for a remote 5-day trek to Machu Picchu with maximum immersion and authentic Andean scenery, this is the most complete version of the Ancascocha route.

This is the longest and most immersive Ancascocha itinerary available.

Difficulty Level, Highest Passes & Altitude Profile

The 5-day Ancascocha Trek is a moderately challenging to challenging high-altitude trek in Peru, primarily due to sustained elevation and extended mountain exposure.

This itinerary includes one of the highest points on the Ancascocha route: the Huayanay Pass, reaching approximately 4,600 meters (15,090 feet). Because this version spans five days, altitude gain is more gradual than in shorter options, allowing better physiological adaptation.

Key altitude features of this trek include:

  • Extended trekking above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet)
  • Long mountain ridgelines with panoramic Andean views
  • High glacial valleys and alpine plains
  • Steady ascents followed by gradual descents toward the Sacred Valley

Daily distances average 10-16 kilometers (6–10 miles), with approximately 6-8 hours of trekking per day. The terrain varies from open highland plateaus to steeper mountain passes, making it physically engaging but achievable for well-prepared hikers.

This extended Ancascocha expedition does not require technical mountaineering skills; however, it demands stamina, preparation, and the ability to hike multiple consecutive days at high elevation.

For travelers seeking a longer, more demanding alternative Inca Trail experience — with higher passes and greater wilderness exposure — the 5-day Ancascocha Trek offers a rewarding, immersive Andean challenge.

Is This 5 Day Ancascocha Trek Right for You?

The 5-Day Ancascocha Trek is designed for travelers who want more than just a hike to Machu Picchu — it’s for those seeking a deeper journey through the Andes. With an extra day on the trail compared to shorter versions, this route allows for better acclimatization, a more relaxed pace, and a richer connection to the landscapes and communities along the way.

This trek is ideal for:

  • Hikers who prefer remote, less-crowded routes
  • Travelers looking for a longer, immersive mountain experience
  • Active adventurers who are comfortable walking 6–8 hours per day at high altitude
  • Nature lovers who enjoy camping in quiet, wide-open Andean valleys

While it does not require technical climbing skills, it does involve high mountain passes and consecutive trekking days. A good level of fitness and a positive mindset will help you fully enjoy the journey.

If you want a scenic, authentic alternative to the Classic Inca Trail — with more time to experience the Andes before arriving at Machu Picchu — this 5-day trek offers the perfect balance of adventure and discovery.

DAY 3

Hike from Ancascocha to Paucarcancha

To conquer the Huayanay pass and then descend to the Inca ruins of Paucarcancha

With the adventurous spirit that fills us with the energy to discover new scenic landscapes, we begin the trek to the highest point of the expedition. Ascending towards Huayanay, 4650 meters high (15,300 feet) (a 1-hour hike), we find an original cobblestone-paved Inca trail on a steep zigzag path uphill. On the way, the beautiful waterfall feeds into Ancascocha Lake.

Once we conquer the top, we will appreciate the valleys of Socma and Paucarcancha. We start our long way down, passing through the ruins of Inca Racay and the rural area of Qesqa, until we reach the fertile valley of Paucarcancha.

  • The walk starts at 05:30. “It is important to start the hiking activities early to reach the goal of Paucarcancha.” Using a pair of canes to ascend to the top of Huayanay and then descend for an average of 5 hours is recommended. The Ancascocha Peru trek terrain is rocky, slippery, and has mud spots.”

  • Trekking distance: 15 km (9 miles).
  • Estimated duration: 9 hours
  • Campsite elevation: Paucarcancha 3,161 meters/10,370 feet.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon tea, and Dinner

PAUCARCANCHA INCA SITE

In Inca times, the Inca ruins of Paucarcancha served as a checkpoint for travelers along the Socma Valley—Huayanay, Sacred Valley, Salkantay, and the Inca Trail. Paucarcancha is a planting site for organic agricultural products on the Inca terraces and hillsides. The climate is conducive to such rural activity, and for walkers, it offers a temperate environment in which to spend the night near the Paucarcancha ruins. From the Inca ruins of Paucarcancha, we are inside the buffer zone of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
