Explore Machu Picchu, Maras & Palccoyo on an Unforgettable 3-Day

The 3 Day Machu Picchu + Palccoyo Rainbow Tour is the perfect choice for travelers who want to see a Rainbow Mountain without the demanding 5,100 m hike to Vinicunca. In three carefully designed days you visit Maras Moray (the Inca agricultural laboratory), the iconic Salineras salt mines, Machu Picchu, and Palccoyo — a quieter, easier, equally photogenic Rainbow Mountain with a gentle 20-minute walk instead of a 3-hour uphill trek.

Why Palccoyo instead of Vinicunca?

  • Easier walk: 20–25 minutes vs. 3 hours uphill at Vinicunca
  • Lower altitude: 4,900 m max vs. 5,100 m at Vinicunca
  • Three mountains in one visit (the “Three Rainbow Mountains” + Stone Forest)
  • Far less crowded — typically 50 visitors vs. 1,000+ at Vinicunca on busy days
  • Ideal for families with children, seniors, and travelers avoiding extreme altitude

From $385 USD per person · 3 days · Group size 1–10 · Direct operator in Cusco

3-Day Machu Picchu, Maras Salt Mines, and Palccoyo Tour: Experience Peru’s wonders in just three days with visits to Machu Picchu, the fascinating Maras Salt Mines, and the colorful Palccoyo Mountains. Join us for an unforgettable adventure in the Andes.

Overview

3 Day Machu Picchu Palccoyo Tour Overview

Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain is iconic — but it requires a 3-hour uphill trek at 5,100 m that defeats many travelers. Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain delivers the same surreal mineral-striped landscape with just 20-25 minutes of gentle walking at 4,900 m. You see the colors, you take the same iconic photos, but you don’t suffer.

Beyond accessibility, Palccoyo gives you more variety in one visit: three colored mountains (the “Three Rainbow Mountains”), the surreal Stone Forest rock formations, and panoramic views of the Ausangate glaciers. Vinicunca has one colorful mountain; Palccoyo has three.

Why Travelers Choose This Tour

This is the right tour if:

  • You want Machu Picchu + a Rainbow Mountain but don’t want to hike for hours at altitude
  • You’re traveling with children aged 8 and older (Vinicunca is too demanding for most kids)
  • You’re a senior in good health who wants the iconic Rainbow photo without the cardiovascular demand
  • You want to skip the Sacred Valley archaeological circuit (covered in our Cultural 3 Day Tour) and prefer Maras Moray instead
  • You want to avoid the crowds at Vinicunca

FAQs About the Machu Picchu & Palccoyo 3-Day Tour

Palccoyo is a cluster of three colorful mineral-striped mountains located in the Checacupe district, south of Cusco. Unlike Vinicunca (the famous “classic” Rainbow Mountain), Palccoyo requires only 20-25 minutes of gentle walking to reach the viewpoint instead of a 3-hour uphill trek. The colors come from iron oxide (red), copper sulfate (green), and chlorite (white) layers in the rock.

Yes — Palccoyo is excellent for families with children aged 8 and older. The walk is short and gentle, the altitude is high but the physical demand is minimal. Vinicunca by contrast is too demanding for most children.

Yes — Palccoyo is one of the most senior-friendly high-altitude experiences near Cusco. The short walking distance eliminates cardiovascular demand. Travelers over 70 should consult their doctor before any 4,900+ m exposure, but for healthy seniors, Palccoyo is far more comfortable than Vinicunca.

This tour focuses on Maras Moray + Palccoyo + Machu Picchu — a different combination than our standard Cultural 3 Day Tour. Maras and Moray show you the Inca engineering brilliance (salt evaporation pools + crop laboratory) in a more compact way than the full Sacred Valley circuit. If you prefer Pisac and Ollantaytambo, choose our Cultural 3 Day Tour instead.

April to December offers the most reliable weather. Colors are most vivid in direct sunlight. January, February, and March are the rainy months — Palccoyo may have rain, occasional snow (which temporarily dims the colors), and limited visibility. The tour operates year-round but we strongly recommend April–December for the best photography.

This tour is sequenced for safety: Day 1 stays in Sacred Valley altitudes (max 3,800 m at Chinchero). Day 2 visits Machu Picchu at 2,400 m. Day 3 visits Palccoyo at 4,900 m only after two nights of altitude adaptation. We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days before tour start to acclimatize.

  • Warm layers (it’s cold at 4,900 m even in summer)
  • Windproof jacket
  • Sun protection: high-SPF cream, sunglasses, hat (UV is intense at altitude)
  • Walking shoes with grip (the trail has loose dirt and gravel)
  • Coca leaves or altitude tablets if you tend to get altitude symptoms
  • Camera with extra battery (cold drains batteries fast)

Most multi-day packages bundle hotels with a 25–40% markup hidden in the price. As a direct operator we refuse to do that — you book your own hotel at the actual public rate and we coordinate pickup. Request curated recommendations across every budget tier at booking.

Cancellations 30+ days before tour start: 80% refund (20% retained for non-refundable Machu Picchu entrance and train tickets). 15-29 days: 50% refund. Less than 14 days: non-refundable, but rescheduling within 12 months is possible subject to availability. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
