Machu Picchu Circuits Included in This Tour
All visitors to Machu Picchu must follow the official circuits established by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture to help preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each route offers different viewpoints, photo opportunities, and access to specific areas within the Inca citadel.
For this 4 Day Machu Picchu Tour, our team carefully manages ticket reservations to secure the best available experience for our travelers. Whenever possible, we prioritize Circuit 2: Circuit of the Inca City (Classic Route), which is widely considered the most complete route for first-time visitors because it combines the classic panoramic viewpoints with access to many of Machu Picchu’s most important archaeological sectors.
Official Machu Picchu Circuits
- Circuit 1 (Panoramic Circuit): Designed for travelers seeking the most iconic views of Machu Picchu. This route includes the upper terraces and provides excellent opportunities for panoramic photographs. Depending on your chosen ticket type and availability, it may also include access to Machu Picchu Mountain, Intipunku (Sun Gate), or the Inca Bridge.
- Circuit 2 (Circuit of the Inca City / Classic): Considered the most complete and popular route for many visitors. It combines the famous panoramic viewpoints with a guided exploration of important sectors of the Inca city, including temples, plazas, terraces, and ceremonial areas that showcase the architectural brilliance of the Incas.
- Circuit 3 (Circuit of the Royalty / Lower Part): This route explores the lower sectors of Machu Picchu and is often preferred by travelers visiting Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu, or the Great Cavern. It includes agricultural terraces, residential areas, and important archaeological structures that provide a unique perspective of the sanctuary.
Ticket availability and circuit assignments are subject to government regulations and may vary depending on travel dates and seasonal demand. During high season, availability can change quickly, so we recommend booking your tour in advance to secure the best possible circuit for your visit.
Regardless of the circuit assigned, every traveler will enjoy an unforgettable guided experience while discovering the history, engineering, and cultural legacy of one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
In the afternoon, you will smoothly descend to Aguas Calientes Pueblo to board your return train. Our private transport will be waiting exactly at the Ollantaytambo station gate to transfer you directly back to your hotel in Cusco.

Finish the guided tours of Peru by exploring the Rainbow Mountain of Cusco.
Your Andean expedition concludes with a spectacular high-altitude challenge. We depart early from Cusco at 05:20 AM in our private comfort transportation. We recommend requesting a box breakfast from your hotel the night before to enjoy during our journey. By departing early, our team ensures we arrive at the trail before the massive tourist crowds, offering you a peaceful, uncrowded route. We drive southwest for approximately 3 hours through dramatic mountain landscapes until we reach the trailhead at Llactoc (4,900 m / 16,076 ft). After receiving your expert private guide’s safety instructions, we begin our journey toward the famous Mountain of Colors.
To ensure maximum comfort and efficiency at this altitude, our premium service fully includes a local horse-riding service for the ascent, where a native community member will safely lead your horse. You will enjoy a scenic 55-minute uphill horseback ride, followed by a short, manageable 15-minute final walk to reach the breathtaking summit pass at 5,100 meters (16,732 feet). Here, you will be rewarded with vibrant mineral stripes and a stunning view of the sacred Ausangate glacier. We strategically schedule this trek on your final day to ensure your body is perfectly acclimated to the Andean heights.
After taking unforgettable photos and enjoying the stunning views at the summit, we begin our return journey by walking downhill for approximately 35 minutes back to the vehicle parking area. We then enjoy a rewarding local lunch before returning to Cusco, arriving between 14:30 and 16:00.

Why We Include the Rainbow Mountain Horse Service (Uphill Ascent Only)
Hiking at 5,100 meters (16,732 feet) is a significant physical challenge. To guarantee our travelers reach the Vinicunca summit safely and without extreme fatigue, our package automatically includes a local horse service for the uphill climb. A native community member will lead your horse during the 55-minute ascent, leaving you fully energized to enjoy the final short walk and the spectacular panoramic views at the top. Please note that the 35-minute downhill return walk is done on foot, as it is highly manageable and helps with blood circulation.
- Personal Tickets: Government regulations state that Machu Picchu passes are personal, non-transferable, and require exact passport details.
- Strict Timing: Peruvian authorities enforce strict entry-hour controls; punctuality is mandatory.
- Hotel Note: Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes on Night 2 is required, but hotel accommodation is not included in this base rate.

Downhill Return Logistics at Rainbow Mountain
While your uphill ascent is fully covered by our included premium horse service, the 35-minute descent is completed on foot. Walking downhill at this altitude is safe, manageable, and strongly recommended by our safety guides to support your body’s circulation and muscle recovery after reaching 5,100 meters.

FAQs about the 4 Day Machu Picchu Express Tour from Cusco (Updated for 2026)
Everything you need to know about our 4 Day Machu Picchu Express Tour — the best-selling balanced itinerary that combines Peru’s three most iconic experiences into a single, efficient journey. Below are the most up-to-date answers for 2026, including the new Machu Picchu circuit system, official entrance fees, the SERNANP conservation fee effective May 1, 2026, altitude management for Rainbow Mountain (4,900 m), and detailed itinerary information.
Our 4 Day Machu Picchu Express Tour is a private, fully guided journey that bundles Peru’s three most iconic destinations into one balanced itinerary: a half-day in Cusco for cultural context, a Sacred Valley exploration with overnight in Aguas Calientes, a sunrise entry to Machu Picchu, and a high-altitude day at Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. It is rated moderately strenuous due to the 4,900 m (16,076 ft) maximum altitude at Rainbow Mountain on the final day. The Express format is designed for travelers with limited time who still want a complete Peru highlights experience without sacrificing quality.
The 4 Day Express adds Rainbow Mountain to the standard Machu Picchu experience, which is the key differentiator. Our 2 Day Tour focuses only on Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Our 3 Day Tour adds a cultural day in Cusco but no Rainbow Mountain. Our 5 Day Premium Tour offers a more relaxed pace with extra rest days for travelers who prefer not to rush. The 4 Day Express is the sweet spot: maximum highlights, minimum time, best value as our best seller.
Vinicunca, known as Rainbow Mountain, has become one of Peru’s most photographed destinations in the past decade. Including it in the 4 Day itinerary lets travelers cover three completely different ecosystems in one trip: the colonial city of Cusco, the lush Sacred Valley and Andean cloud forest at Machu Picchu, and the high-altitude colored mineral landscapes of Vinicunca. If your priority is only Rainbow Mountain without Machu Picchu, see our dedicated Rainbow Mountain Full Day Tour or the easier Horseback option.
Rainbow Mountain reaches 4,900 m (16,076 ft), which is significantly higher than Machu Picchu (2,430 m) and Cusco (3,350 m). The 4 Day Tour is intentionally designed to give your body time to adapt: Day 1 in Cusco at 3,350 m starts the acclimatization process, Day 2 descends into the Sacred Valley (2,800 m) and Aguas Calientes (2,040 m) to let your lungs recover, Day 3 brings you back up to Cusco, and only on Day 4 do you ascend to Vinicunca. By that point your body has had three full days of altitude exposure. We also provide coca tea, oxygen, and slow pacing during the hike.
Machu Picchu first, Rainbow Mountain last — and there is a deliberate reason. Visiting Machu Picchu (2,430 m) early gives your body two relatively low-altitude days to acclimatize before tackling Vinicunca’s 4,900 m. Reversing the order would mean attempting the highest altitude on Day 1 or 2, increasing the risk of altitude sickness ruining your Machu Picchu experience. Some operators offer reverse itineraries, but our medical and logistical experience strongly favors the order Cusco → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu → Rainbow Mountain.
Our 4 Day Express Tour uses Circuit 2 – Classic Route (Ruta 2), the most complete itinerary available to general visitors. This includes the iconic postcard photo, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, the Intihuatana sundial, the Three Windows Temple, and the Sacred Rock. Since 2024 Machu Picchu has been divided into three official one-way circuits — Panoramic (1), Classic (2), and Royalty (3) — and Circuit 2 covers the most visually iconic sectors. If you prefer Panoramic or Royalty, tell us at booking and we will adjust your ticket.
For 2026 the official entrance fees set by Peru’s Ministry of Culture (Resolution Nº 000284-2025-MC) are: S/152 (~USD 40) for foreign adults on standard circuits, and S/200 (~USD 53) for circuits with Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Starting May 1, 2026, SERNANP added a mandatory conservation fee of S/11 for foreign adults (S/5 for nationals and foreign minors), bringing the total to roughly S/163 / USD 48. Children under 3 enter free. All official tickets are included in the price of our 4 Day Express Tour.
The dry season from May to September is the ideal window, especially because Rainbow Mountain is highly weather-dependent — colors are vivid only with clear skies and snow-free terrain. June, July, and August are peak. April and October are excellent shoulder months. From November to March, Rainbow Mountain can be partially or fully covered in snow, which dramatically reduces the colored mineral visibility; we may suggest the Palccoyo alternative during those months. Machu Picchu portion operates rain or shine year-round.
The Machu Picchu portion of the tour is rated easy — gentle stone-step walking inside the citadel. The Sacred Valley and Cusco portions are also easy. The single demanding section is Day 4 at Rainbow Mountain: approximately 7 km round-trip hike with a 350 m elevation gain at altitudes between 4,600 m and 4,900 m. Average time: 3.5 hours. If you have good cardiovascular fitness, no heart or lung conditions, and have spent at least 3 days at altitude, you should be fine. Horses are available at Rainbow Mountain for those who prefer not to hike — book this option in advance.
The price includes: all private hotel pickups and drop-offs in Cusco; private transport throughout the 4 days; a half-day guided Cusco visit on Day 1 with Boleto Turístico de Cusco entrance fees; Sacred Valley partial Boleto Turístico for Pisac and Ollantaytambo on Day 2; buffet lunch on Day 2 in Urubamba; round-trip Inca Rail Voyager train tickets; official Machu Picchu entrance on Circuit 2 with the new SERNANP fee included; round-trip Consettur shuttle bus; certified private English-speaking guide for all 4 days; entrance and group transport to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain on Day 4 with breakfast and lunch; and all local taxes. Hotels, dinners, optional upgrades, and tips are not included.
Day 1 – Cusco Acclimatization: Pickup at 13:30 for a relaxed half-day Cusco visit. Return at 18:30 (see Cusco Half Day City Tour for sites covered). Day 2 – Sacred Valley + Train to Aguas Calientes: Pickup at 07:30, Pisac and Ollantaytambo, buffet lunch, Inca Rail train at 16:36, overnight in Aguas Calientes. Day 3 – Machu Picchu + Return to Cusco: Consettur bus to the citadel for the 08:00 AM slot, 2-hour guided tour on Circuit 2, lunch in Aguas Calientes, return train at 14:30, transfer to Cusco hotel. Day 4 – Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): Early pickup at 04:00, 3-hour drive to the trailhead, breakfast, 3.5-hour hike to the summit and back, lunch, return to Cusco around 18:00.
Bring your original passport (checked at every checkpoint), a small day backpack under 5 kg for the train, comfortable hiking shoes with strong tread for Rainbow Mountain, light layers plus a windproof jacket for high altitude, a thicker fleece or down layer for Vinicunca (temperatures can drop near freezing even in dry season), waterproof poncho year-round, high-SPF sunscreen (UV is intense at 4,900 m), insect repellent for the cloud forest, sunglasses with UV protection, a wide-brim hat plus a beanie, a reusable water bottle, personal medication including altitude pills (Sorojchi or Diamox), snacks, and 400–600 soles in cash for tips, meals, and incidentals.
Your private guided tour at Machu Picchu lasts 2 hours, the regulation-mandated maximum on Circuit 2 once the route begins. Your certified guide explains history, astronomy, agriculture, and architecture of each main sector. After the guided portion ends you must exit the citadel — Machu Picchu is strictly one-way since 2024 and no re-entry is permitted on the same ticket. If you want extra time inside, you can purchase a second-entry ticket in advance (additional USD 75 per person); ask us before your trip.
Yes. Every visitor must enter accompanied by an officially certified tour guide, with a maximum ratio of 16 visitors per guide. Independent entry is no longer permitted. Our 4 Day Tour always includes a private certified English-speaking guide. The same guide accompanies you for Days 1, 2, and 3 of the tour, and a specialized high-altitude guide leads Day 4 at Rainbow Mountain. Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
Yes, both are available as upgrades on Day 3 if requested at booking, but consider the impact: the additional 2–3 hours of vigorous climbing right before Day 4’s Rainbow Mountain hike can leave you exhausted. Most travelers on the 4 Day Express skip the Machu Picchu mountains and save their energy for Vinicunca. If you really want both, the 5 Day Tour is a more comfortable option. Mountain upgrades cost USD 95 per person extra; Huayna Picchu permits sell out 3–4 months ahead in high season.
You stay 2 nights in Cusco (before Day 1 and after Day 3), and 1 night in Aguas Calientes between Day 2 and Day 3. Hotels are not included but we can book them as an add-on. For Cusco we recommend Casa Andina Premium, Tierra Viva Cusco Plaza, or JW Marriott (luxury). For Aguas Calientes we suggest El MaPi by Inkaterra, Sumaq Machu Picchu, or Tierra Viva Machu Picchu. We strongly recommend rooms with hot water and heating for the Cusco nights — temperatures drop below 5 °C indoors in June and July.
Both Inca Rail and PeruRail enforce a strict luggage limit of 5 kg (11 lb) or one carry-on bag plus a small handbag per passenger. Suitcases and large backpacks must be left behind. We coordinate free luggage storage at your hotel in Cusco — your bags wait safely while you go to Aguas Calientes and return for Day 4. Pack one small overnight bag for the one night in Aguas Calientes with the essentials.
Yes. In 2026 Machu Picchu allows a maximum of 5,600 visitors per day in high season (January–November and December 30–31) and 4,500 per day in low season, distributed across 10 sub-circuits with specific entry time slots. We recommend booking the 4 Day Express Tour at least 2 to 3 months ahead in high season because Rainbow Mountain dates also affect availability. Your ticket has a fixed entry slot with a tolerance of 30 minutes low season or 45 minutes high season.
The only official channel is the Ministry of Culture website tuboleto.cultura.pe. Physical counters operate in Cusco (Casa Garcilaso) and Aguas Calientes (Pachacutec Avenue), but in 2026 most tickets are sold online and physical offices often show “sold out” days in advance. When you book the 4 Day Tour with Kondor Path Tours we secure your ticket on the date, circuit, and time slot of your choice as soon as your deposit is confirmed — you do not need to handle the official platform yourself.
It is suitable for children aged 12 and older with good fitness. The Rainbow Mountain portion is the limiting factor — 4,900 m of altitude is generally not recommended for children under 12 due to higher risk of altitude sickness. For families with younger kids we recommend our 2 Day or 3 Day Machu Picchu Tours, which keep maximum altitude under 3,800 m. Children under 3 enter Machu Picchu free; children 3–17 receive USD 20 discount on the entrance fee.
Yes. Full-time university students with valid ISIC card receive a discount of approximately USD 20 on the Machu Picchu entrance fee. Citizens of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela pay the promotional Andean Community rate of S/64 general / S/32 reduced instead of S/152. PeruRail and Inca Rail also offer reduced fares on selected trains. Send us a copy of your ID at booking and we apply every discount you qualify for.
Rainbow Mountain’s colors come from mineral oxidation, and they are most visible under dry, sunny conditions. From November to March, snowfall can cover the colored slopes — the landscape remains stunning but the rainbow effect is muted. We monitor weather 48 hours in advance. If conditions are severe, we offer an alternative: a switch to the lower-altitude Palccoyo (4,750 m, easier hike, three colored mountains side by side), or a reschedule to another day. Pack waterproof clothes regardless of season because afternoon weather changes rapidly above 4,500 m.
Altitude affects everyone differently, even after acclimatization. If you feel unable to continue, you have three options: horses are available at the trailhead for the entire ascent (~USD 30 round-trip, not included), you can wait at the lower viewpoint while your group continues, or your guide can walk back with you to the parking area. We never push travelers beyond their limit. If you opt out completely, the rest of your group’s experience is unaffected. Please mention any heart, lung, or blood-pressure conditions at booking so we can advise honestly.
We recommend bringing 400 to 600 Peruvian soles (USD 110 to 165) in cash per person for the four days. This covers dinners not included (4 days × ~S/60), snacks and water (~S/50), souvenirs at Pisac and Aguas Calientes markets (~S/120), tips for the guide and driver (suggested 10% of tour price in USD or soles), horse rental at Rainbow Mountain if needed (~S/100), restroom fees at archaeological sites (S/2 each), and an emergency reserve. ATMs in Aguas Calientes charge high fees — withdraw in Cusco before departure.
Bookings cancelled 30 or more days before departure receive a refund of 80% of the deposit (the remaining 20% covers non-refundable train tickets, Machu Picchu permits, and Rainbow Mountain reservations already issued in your name). Cancellations made 15 to 29 days before departure receive 50%. Cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable but the booking can be rescheduled within 12 months at no extra cost, subject to availability. Travel insurance is strongly recommended given the high-altitude nature of Day 4. Full terms are on our Terms and Conditions page.
For high season (May to September and December 20 to January 5), book 3 to 9 months in advance. This guarantees your preferred train, the 08:00 AM Circuit 2 slot, hotels, and Rainbow Mountain logistics. For shoulder season (April, October, November), 6 to 8 weeks is usually safe. For low season (January to March), 4 to 6 weeks works, but Rainbow Mountain weather is unpredictable then. Last-minute bookings under 2 weeks are sometimes possible but limited to available trains and slots.
The 4 Day Express has been our most-booked itinerary for years because it solves the most common traveler dilemma: limited vacation days but a long bucket list. In 96 hours it covers three of Peru’s top-five attractions (Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain), gives you a Cusco acclimatization day, and still leaves room to fly in and o
