Cusco Hotel Pick-Up – Start of the Horseback Experience
Your Kondor Path Tours guide and private vehicle will pick you up from your Cusco accommodation at 5:20 AM. From here, you’ll begin a scenic drive through the southern Andes, passing small towns such as Urcos and Cusipata while watching the sunrise over the mountains. (Tip: bring warm layers—it’s cold in the early morning at high altitude.)
After approximately 3 hours of travel, you’ll arrive at the starting point of the experience. Here, you’ll meet the local horse handlers and your assigned Andean horse.
Take a few minutes to prepare, stretch, and get ready before you begin your journey to the mountain.
Begin a scenic horseback ride of approximately 5 km (50–60 minutes), gradually ascending through open valleys surrounded by snow-capped peaks and herds of alpacas.
This section of the journey allows you to conserve energy while still enjoying the full experience of the route, making it ideal for travelers who prefer less physical effort at high altitude.
At this point, we leave the horses for a short 15-minute walk. This is the only steep part, but don’t worry! Your private guide will set a slow pace (pole-pole) so you can reach the top safely. The reward? The most iconic view of Vinicunca without the exhaustion of the full trek.
Spend between 20 and 45 minutes enjoying the landscape. Take photos, admire the natural formations, and enjoy panoramic views of the Andes.
From this vantage point, you may also see nearby valleys and distant snow-covered peaks, including Ausangate.
While driving, watch the sunrise over the Vilcanota range—a photographer’s dream!
Begin your return journey on foot. The downhill walk (approximately 3.5 km) is easier and takes around 30–45 minutes.
Additional horseback assistance may be available upon request.
The downhill walk is easy on the knees and perfect for photos.
Enjoy a hot, delicious buffet with local Peruvian flavors. Perfect to recover your energy after the summit!
After lunch, begin the drive back to Cusco through scenic Andean landscapes. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views—or take a well-earned rest after an early start.
You’ll be dropped off at your hotel in Cusco in the afternoon.
Note: This is a private experience, so the itinerary may be adjusted depending on weather conditions, pace, and your preferences.

Additional horseback assistance beyond the standard service may be available upon request and is arranged directly with local handlers.
It is impossible to appropriately dress for a day of horseback riding in the Rainbow Mountain Tour Peru. When you leave Cusco at around 5:00 (05:30), you’ll want to wear a few layers of gloves, as you’ll likely be freezing.
When the bus dropped us off at the beginning of the ride, we were still shaking. When we saw people wearing shorts and T-shirts, we thought they were crazy.
Later in the day, the sun set. The heat made the skin feel hot. The travelers, who had worn shorts, changed into more suitable clothing. It was about our visit, but the travelers had a snowstorm the day before, so anything was possible.
Visiting the route on a horseback tour in Peru means facing frequent weather changes. It can be cold in the morning and very sunny at noon. Proper gear will ensure you stay comfortable:
Physical Preparation: Remember that Rainbow Mountain’s summit is over 5,000 m (16,400 ft) above sea level. We highly recommend you spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400 m altitude) beforehand to acclimatize. This helps your body adjust. It will enhance your journey experience and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Take it easy with alcohol and heavy exercise when you arrive. Stay hydrated, and consider drinking coca tea. It is a local remedy for altitude. Our guide will also carry oxygen and monitor your condition during the trek. Most people enjoy this tour. However, if you experience headaches or dizziness, please inform your guide immediately. We can then pause or descend as needed.

Rainbow Mountain by Horse and Cars
No experience needed! 🐴 Our horses are calm and well-trained.
The horseback ride is relatively easy and does not need much effort—you sit for almost an hour and enjoy the view. The main challenge is the altitude and the final 15-minute hike.
That last part to the top is steep and high up. It can be breathless and tough, even for fit hikers. The altitude makes it more challenging.
We recommend taking it slow, pausing as needed—reaching the top is not a race! Overall, compared to a standard 2–3-hour hike, the horseback tour is significantly less strenuous.
Expect a moderate effort: you’ll still walk downhill for 30-40 minutes, which can tire the legs a little, but it’s mostly gentle. If you can walk for an hour and climb a few flights of stairs, you should be able to handle this tour. Our guides will be there to support you and make adjustments if anyone in the group is struggling.
It’s possible to experience mild symptoms at the top due to the high altitude (5,100 m). Common symptoms include being out of breath, experiencing a slight headache, or feeling dizzy.
We strongly advise acclimatizing in Cusco for a couple of days before going to Rainbow Mountain. During the tour, we mitigate risks by ascending gradually (driving then riding up) and carrying oxygen.
Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol the night before helps. In our experience, most people enjoy the horseback tour. The physical effort is less than hiking. This makes it easier to adjust to the altitude.
If you feel unwell at any point, please inform your guide immediately. We can always pause or even turn back if needed—your health is a priority. Severe altitude sickness is rare on a well-planned tour with acclimatization. However, it’s essential to listen to your body.
(Fun fact: Locals often chew coca leaves or candy to help with altitude. You might give it a try—it’s an age-old tradition in the Andes.)
Yes, safety is our top concern. We work with the local community that cares for the horses. The animals are treated well and are only taken out for one trip each day. They also get plenty of rest.
They are used to the trail. They never have to run or carry more than they can handle. Each horse carries one average-sized person. You will always have a guide or horse handler nearby.
We also provide helmets for riders. For you, the most “dangerous” aspect is the altitude, which we’ve addressed above. The trail itself is wide and safe—no cliff-edge riding or anything like that.
We run this tour often, and our guides are very experienced. They ensure our guests are safe and have a good time. Rest assured, you’re in good hands (and hooves)!
Absolutely—families are welcome. As mentioned, children aged seven and up can enjoy the horse ride (accompanied by a parent/guardian). Kids often love the adventure of riding a horse and seeing the llamas around.
For seniors or less mobile travelers, this tour is an excellent option since the horses do most of the work. We’ve had travelers in their 60s and 70s successfully reach Rainbow Mountain by horse.
The key is to be aware of altitude effects. As long as you have acclimatized and are in good health, age is not a significant barrier. You should be able to sit on a horse and walk a little.
Our team will be there to assist anyone who needs a helping hand during the hike portion. If you have specific concerns, such as knee problems related to downhill skiing, please let us know.
We can arrange exceptional assistance, such as a horse to go down or extra support. We want adventurers of all ages to experience this wonder!
We run the tour rain or shine, but safety is our top priority. If there are severe weather warnings (such as heavy snow or thunderstorms), we may adjust the departure time. Light rain or a few snowflurries often happen in the mountains.
In these cases, we provide you with rain ponchos and proceed with caution. Usually, the weather at dawn can look iffy, but then it clears up by late morning. Our guides are very familiar with local weather patterns and will make the call in your best interest.
If rescheduling isn’t possible and weather prevents access, we provide appropriate refunds or alternative options.
Tip: Always bring a rain jacket and dress in layers, just in case. And remember, a little mist can add a magical beauty to Rainbow Mountain. Every type of weather has its charm!
From May to September, the dry season is generally the best time to visit Rainbow Mountain in Peru. During this period, the weather is more stable, and there is less chance of rain, making the journey more comfortable.
For the Colored Mountain Horse Experience, wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather conditions. Layers are advisable, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Sturdy footwear, a hat, sunscreen, and a waterproof jacket are recommended.
It is best to book early for the Rainbow Mountain Horse Ride. This is important, especially during busy tourist seasons.
