DAY 1

Cusco Sacred Valley Tour Day Trip

Sacred Valley Private Tour with Kondor Path Tours—A direct tour operator

  1. 7:30 AM – Cusco Hotel Pickup: Your private Kondor Path Tour guide and driver will meet you at your Cusco hotel in the morning. Get comfortable in our vehicle as we depart for the Sacred Valley, heading toward Pisac. Enjoy views of the countryside as the city gives way to rural farmland and mountains. (Pickup time is flexible upon request.)

  2. 8:30 AM – Taray Viewpoint: Before reaching Pisac Ruins, stop at Mirador de Taray, a scenic lookout over the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru. Gaze upon patchwork fields and the Urubamba River winding through the valley floor, framed by towering peaks. This breathtaking viewpoint is an immaculate introduction to the Inca Valley’s scale and beauty—and an ideal photo opportunity.

  3. 9:00 AM – Pisac Inca Ruins: Arrive at the Pisac archaeological park, perched on a mountainside. Explore impressive Inca terraces carved into the slopes and wander through ancient temples and dwellings. Your guide will illuminate the site’s significance—from the sun temple to the ceremonial baths. Take in spectacular vistas of the valley below as you learn about Pisac’s role in Inca civilization.

  4. 10:30 AM – Pisac Town & Market: Descend into Pisac town, a charming village where colonial and Inca influences blend. Walk through the Pisac Market, one of the most famous crafts markets in the region. Colorful stalls overflow with handmade goods: alpaca wool sweaters, woven blankets, pottery, paintings, and more. You’ll have time to browse, shop, and perhaps practice your bargaining skills with local vendors. It’s a lively cultural experience!

  5. Noon – Urubamba (Lunch Break): We continue driving along the scenic valley to Urubamba, the largest town in the Sacred Valley. Here we’ll take a break for lunch. Lunch is not included, but your guide will recommend trusted restaurants (from Peruvian buffets to farm-to-table eateries). Enjoy a relaxing meal, sampling Peruvian dishes—perhaps lomo saltado (stir-fried beef) or trucha frita (freshly fried trout)—as you reflect on the morning’s discoveries. (Vegetarian and vegan options are readily available.)

  6. 1:30 PM – Ollantaytambo Fortress: After lunch, journey to Ollantaytambo, an enchanting Inca town with original stone streets and waterways. Here you’ll explore the Ollantaytambo fortress and temple complex, one of the most iconic sites in the Sacred Valley. Climb the stone terraces to reach the Sun Temple at the top, and admire the massive carved rocks hauled by the Incas from miles away. From above, marvel at the layout of the town (which still follows an Inca grid) and spot the Inca storehouses high on the mountain face. Your guide will share the dramatic history of Ollantaytambo, including battles won and lost against the Spanish conquistadors.

  7. 3:30 PM – Chinchero Ruins & Weaving Center: On our way back to Cusco, we visit Chinchero, a highland town known for its rich traditions. Explore the Chinchero archaeological site, which features Inca terraces and the remains of royal estates, as well as a charming colonial-era church built on top of an Inca temple (if open, you can peek inside to see its beautiful painted ceilings—a small entry fee applies). Chinchero is famed for textiles, so we’ll also stop at a community weaving cooperative. Here, local weavers demonstrate how they clean wool, create natural dyes from plants, and weave intricate patterns by hand. You’ll have a chance to interact with the local Chinchero artisans and appreciate the skill involved in this centuries-old Inca craft.

  8. 5:30 PM – Return to Cusco: After a full day of exploration, relax in the vehicle for the drive back to Cusco. We’ll ascend out of the valley and arrive at your hotel around 6:00 PM (traffic dependent). Drop-off at your hotel, residence, Airbnb, or another central location in Cusco is included. By evening, you’ll be back in the city with wonderful memories and photos of your Sacred Valley adventure!

Optional: If you prefer, we can end the tour in Ollantaytambo instead of returning to Cusco—ideal if you plan to take an evening train to Machu Picchu or stay overnight in the Sacred Valley. Just let us know in advance, and we can accommodate this at no extra cost.

Customize Your Experience

One of the best aspects of a private tour is flexibility! Here are some ways you can customize your Sacred Valley day trip with us:

  • Add Machu Picchu: Make the most of your time in Peru by adding Machu Picchu to your itinerary. While it’s not possible to visit Machu Picchu on the same day as the Sacred Valley tour (due to time constraints), we can arrange a 2-day tour for you. Spend Day 1 exploring the Sacred Valley, overnight in Ollantaytambo, and take an early train to Machu Picchu on Day 2. Check out our 2-Day Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu Tour for an incredible extended experience, or ask us to create a custom package—we’re happy to help!

  • Adventure Activities: Seeking some adrenaline? Let us know if you’d like to incorporate adventure sports in the Sacred Valley. We can organize options like ATV riding to Maras & Moray, zip-lining across the valley, horseback riding, or even mountain biking routes. (Additional costs or an extra day may apply for certain activities.) Your tour can be as thrilling or as relaxed as you wish.

  • Special Requests: Do you have a particular interest or destination in mind? Want to stop for a short hike, visit the Maras salt mines, or see a specific village? Traveling with kids or celebrating a special occasion? We can adjust the schedule, include a picnic, arrange a photographer, or add a stop at a chicha (corn beer) brewery—you name it! This is your day trip, and we strive to make it perfect for you.

Tip: If you have more than one day in the region, we highly recommend spending a night in the Sacred Valley. This allows you to explore at a slower pace and enjoy an evening in the peaceful valley (and it helps with altitude acclimatization by sleeping lower than Cusco). Ask us about adding an overnight stay or combining the Sacred Valley tour with other destinations.

You can purchase a partial ticket for S/70 soles (about US $25) per person, which covers all Sacred Valley sites for one day. If you also plan to visit other Cusco attractions, a full ticket for S/130 soles (~US $40) covers 10 days and multiple sites. Our guide will assist you in buying the appropriate ticket on the day of the tour (cash in soles is recommended).
  • Meals: No meals are included. You will pay directly for your lunch in Urubamba (approximately $10–$20 per person, depending on restaurant and menu choices). We provide bottled water in the vehicle, but bringing extra water is a good idea.
  • Optional Entry Fees: If you choose to visit Chinchero’s colonial church (when open) or any additional sites like Maras salt mines (if added to your itinerary), those small entry fees are not included. For example, the Maras salt flats entry is 20 soles ($6), and the Chinchero church is 5 soles ($1.50).

What to Bring on the Sacred Valley Private Tour?

  • Comfortable Shoes: Wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers for optimal comfort and support. You’ll be exploring uneven ground at ruins, so sound footing is essential.
  • Layers of Clothing: The weather can vary significantly from cool mornings to warm midday sun. Dress in layers – e.g., a t-shirt, a long-sleeve shirt, a fleece, and a lightweight waterproof jacket (especially during the rainy season from December to March). Don’t forget a sun hat or cap.
  • Sun Protection: The highland sun is intense—pack sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses, and a lip balm with SPF. Even on cloudy days, UV exposure is high at altitude.
  • Water & Snacks: Bring a water bottle (we suggest at least 2 liters per person for the day). Staying hydrated helps prevent altitude effects. We’ll provide opportunities to buy extra water or snacks, but it’s handy to have your own. Granola bars or fruit are great for a quick energy boost between stops.
  • Cash & Documents: Carry some local currency (soles) for buying souvenirs, snacks, or tipping. Small bills are best for shopping at the market. Additionally, please bring a valid ID (such as a passport or driver’s license copy), as you may need it for ticket purchases or in case of any checkpoints.
  • Camera/Smartphone: You’ll want to capture the incredible scenery and memorable moments! Bring your camera or phone (and maybe a portable charger). There will be countless photo opportunities, from panoramic valley vistas to up-close shots of intricate stonework and textiles.
  • Rain Gear (Seasonal): If traveling in the rainy season (approximately December through March), pack a compact rain poncho or umbrella. Even in the dry season, a light rain jacket can be helpful in case of an odd shower or windy conditions at high elevations.

(If you forget something, don’t worry – many items like hats, ponchos, and water can be purchased along the way or from vendors at the sites. Your guide will assist if needed.)

Travel Guide

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This is a 100% private tour. Only you and your party will participate, plus our guide and driver. We do not combine separate bookings into the same tour, ensuring a personalized experience for each guest. This allows maximum flexibility for your schedule and interests.

Absolutely! One of the top benefits of a private tour is the flexibility it offers. The outlined itinerary covers the popular highlights (Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, etc.). Still, you are free to spend more time at one place and less at another, or even add an extra stop if time permits. Discuss your preferences with your guide – for example, if you’re an avid hiker, we can include a short trail walk, or if you love shopping, we can allocate more time at the market. We want to craft the day to suit.

The standard full-day tour visits Pisac ruins, Ollantaytambo fortress, and Chinchero ruins – three of the most important archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley. Additionally, we stop at the Pisac market and a Chinchero weaving center for cultural experiences. The Taray panoramic viewpoint is also included. If you are interested in visiting other sites (such as Maras, Moray, or additional villages), please let us know in advance – we may be able to adjust the route (time permitting) or suggest a longer itinerary.

Not by default – Machu Picchu is located further beyond the Sacred Valley and typically requires a train ride and an additional day of travel. However, you can combine the Sacred Valley tour with a visit to Machu Picchu as a separate excursion. Many travelers visit the Sacred Valley as a day trip, then travel to Machu Picchu the next day. We offer a 2-day Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu tour, where Day 1 is spent exploring the Sacred Valley and Day 2 is dedicated to Machu Picchu. If you’d like to add Machu Picchu, we can help arrange tickets, train, and everything you need for an extended trip. Just ask us about the options! (Note: It’s highly recommended to see Machu Picchu while you’re in Cusco – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.)

The Sacred Valley begins about 15 km (9 miles) north of Cusco. By road, Pisac (the first major stop) is roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour from Cusco. We will drive you in our private vehicle from Cusco into the valley. The roads are paved and scenic, passing through mountain passes and small communities. Throughout the day, we’ll handle all your transportation between sites. The longest stretch of driving is returning from Chinchero to Cusco (about 40 minutes). The stops break up the drives, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs and enjoy the views.

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft). The Sacred Valley is lower than Cusco, ranging from ~2,800 m (9,200 ft) in the valley floor (Urubamba, Ollantaytambo) up to ~3,800 m (12,500 ft) at the highest points (Chinchero). Many people find relief going to the valley if they’ve felt Cusco’s altitude. That said, you will be walking around ruins at an elevation of 3,000+ meters, which can be tiring. We recommend spending at least a day or two in Cusco to acclimatize before doing the Sacred Valley tour. During the tour, please proceed at a slow pace, stay hydrated, and notify your guide if you experience any discomfort. We carry an oxygen tank and a first aid kit for emergencies. In general, most visitors handle the Sacred Valley well, especially if they’ve adjusted to Cusco’s altitude first.

The Sacred Valley remains open year-round, offering a beautiful sight to behold at all times. The dry season (April through October) is generally considered the best time – days are sunny and temperatures are mild (though it can be chilly in early morning or at night). This is also the peak tourist season. The rainy season (November through March) brings frequent afternoon showers and green landscapes with wildflowers; it’s also less crowded. Even in the rainy season, mornings are often clear. When traveling during December to February, be prepared with rain gear and flexible expectations. In summary, April, May, September, and October often offer a nice balance of good weather and fewer crowds, but any time of year can be significant. We run this tour every day of the year.

Yes! Our private Sacred Valley tour is excellent for families. Kids are welcome and often enjoy the adventure of exploring ruins and spotting llamas or alpacas (you can find them around Pisac and Ollantaytambo). The pace of a private tour is ideal for families – you can go at a slower pace, take breaks, and adapt the day to keep the little ones happy. Our guides have experience working with families and can make the history fun and engaging for younger travelers. We recommend children 5 and above for the full-day tour. (Younger kids are allowed, of course, but a long day of touring can be tiring for toddlers.) Be sure to bring sun protection and snacks for the kids. Child car seats can be provided in the vehicle upon request. Also, note that children under 10 often receive discounts on entrance tickets (e.g., the Boleto Turístico) – we’ll help arrange that on the day.

Yes, we provide guides fluent in English for this tour. All our primary guides are bilingual (speaking both Spanish and English), and some speak additional languages – please let us know if you have a special request. If you prefer a Spanish-language tour (or another language), we can accommodate that as well, subject to guide availability. Communication won’t be an issue – our team is very experienced with international travelers. Additionally, our drivers typically speak Spanish and some English. Your guide will handle all interpretation and explanations at the sites and can also assist with translating any interactions with locals (e.g., at the market or weaving center).

No, entrance fees are not included (this is standard for nearly all tours in Cusco). As mentioned above, you will need to purchase the tourist ticket (Boleto Turístico) for the Sacred Valley sites. The cost is 70 soles per person for a partial ticket. This ticket grants entry to Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, and Moray if you visit them within a 2-day period. If you already have a full Cusco tourist ticket (130 soles, 10-day validity) from another tour or plan, it will also cover the Sacred Valley entries. We will help you obtain the required tickets on the morning of the tour – it’s easy. Just bring cash (soles) for tickets. Other sites, such as the Chinchero church (5 soles) or the Maras salt mines (10 soles), are optional and can also be paid in cash at the entrance if included.

Lunch is not included in the base price, giving you the freedom to choose your dining preference in Urubamba. We will take you to a recommended restaurant. Most travelers enjoy a buffet lunch with a variety of Peruvian dishes, or you can order à la carte. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets can be accommodated – just inform your guide of any dietary restrictions and they will ensure the restaurant prepares something suitable. Peruvian cuisine is highly diverse, offering a wide range of options (including grains, vegetables, and more, rather than just meat). If you prefer to bring your own snacks or a packed lunch, that’s fine too. Just let us know your plan.

Booking is easy! You can reserve online through our website (click “Book Now” and follow the steps to select your date and group size), or simply email us at info@kondorpathtours.com with your desired date and number of people. A deposit is usually required to confirm the tour. If you have any questions before booking, please don’t hesitate to send us a message via email or WhatsApp – we are responsive and happy to assist. We recommend booking at least a few weeks in advance, especially in the high season (May–Sept), to secure your preferred date. However, if you’re making a last-minute request, please check with us – we often can accommodate short-notice requests, depending on guide availability. Your adventure is just a few clicks away!

We understand that travel plans can change. Our cancellation policy will be provided at booking (it generally allows for changes or cancellations with reasonable notice – usually a few days – without heavy penalty, except any third-party fees like train tickets if you booked Machu Picchu). If you need to change the tour date or adjust the number of people, please contact us as soon as possible. We will do our best to accommodate you. We are flexible and customer-focused – your satisfaction is our top priority. For any unforeseen issues (such as flight delays or illness), please communicate with us and we’ll find a solution.

It’s not required to carry your passport during the Sacred Valley tour itself, but it’s wise to have some form of ID. A photocopy or digital copy of your passport is a good idea, or a driver’s license, for identification purposes. If you are visiting Machu Picchu or taking the train, a passport is required. However, for Sacred Valley sites, a passport is not typically required – only the entry tickets are needed. It’s always a good idea to have identification in case of an emergency. If you have a student card (ISIC) and plan to use it for discounts, bring that as well. Note, however, that the standard Sacred Valley ticket doesn’t offer student rates (only minors).

We love surprising our guests with small touches – whether it’s providing you a taste of a local fruit in season, pointing out hidden Inca carvings most visitors miss, or showing you the best angle for photos. Because it’s a private tour, we can do these extra things. If time allows, your guide may include a bonus stop, such as a cooperative where you can see alpacas and llamas up close (and even feed them), or a quick visit to a chichería (a local corn beer house) to observe traditional brewing methods. These aren’t guaranteed on every tour (it depends on the day’s flow and your interest), but we always aim to make your experience memorable and unique!

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is located 15 kilometers northeast of Cusco. A drive to one of the nearest villages will take about 40 minutes. From there, you can move to the other villages in the valley.

Spend at least one night in the Sacred Valley in Peru.

Every day, more tourists visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas, increasing the number of hotels in this part of Cusco. Luxury hotels are often built on old farms and cornfields, blending harmoniously with the surrounding scenic nature. We also found a terrifying hotel perched on a cliff 400 meters above the Urubamba River. There are also a variety of accommodations to suit all tastes and budgets.
