Tres Cruces Pass, at 4,300 m, is crossed early in the hike, while trekkers are freshest after arriving from Cusco (itself at 3,400 m, giving a reasonable acclimatization baseline). From there, the trail descends steadily past the ruins themselves and down into Lamay in the Sacred Valley, a significantly lower elevation — meaning the day’s hardest breathing happens on the way up, with an easier, lower-altitude descent to finish.
