Is This High-Altitude Trek Right for You?

The 7 Lakes of Ausangate hike is designed for travelers who enjoy active outdoor experiences and are comfortable spending several hours walking at high altitude. While this is a full-day trek and not a multi-day expedition, the elevation makes it more demanding than a typical sightseeing tour.

You will be hiking above 4,300 meters (14,100 ft), where the air is thinner and the terrain includes gradual ascents, uneven paths, and open mountain landscapes. A good level of physical fitness is recommended, along with prior acclimatization in Cusco or the Sacred Valley for at least 1–2 days.

This trek is a great choice if you:

  • Enjoy scenic mountain hikes with panoramic views
  • Want to explore beyond the classic tourist routes
  • Are seeking a one-day adventure from Cusco
  • Feel comfortable walking 5 hours at a steady pace

It may not be ideal if you are sensitive to altitude, have knee issues, or prefer short and easy walks. However, the pace can be adapted to the group, and optional horse rental is available for certain sections if needed.

If you’re seeking dramatic landscapes, turquoise glacial lakes, and a genuine Andean experience without committing to a multi-day trek, this hike can be an unforgettable highlight of your time in Peru.

Itinerary

Full-Day Itinerary: Cusco – Pacchanta – 7 Lakes – Cusco

The snowy Ausangate offers incredible panoramic views across the Andes of Cusco. We found several lagoons of various colors, reflecting Mother Nature’s minerals.

DAY 1

Travel from Cusco to Pacchanta – Hiking 07 lakes – Cusco

Explore the Ausangate area on a full-day trek through the Andes. We start the land trip, leaving Cusco at 05:00 and heading toward Tinki and Pacchanta (4,200 meters or 13,779 feet). It is essential to mention that the tourist area is cold, so bring thermal clothing to enjoy the adventure through the Andes of Ausangate.

In Pacchanta, we start the walk of 7 lagoons in Ausangate to cover 05 hours of walking, passing, and seeing the beautiful lagoons of Azulcocha, Otorongo, Pucacocha, Alqacocha, and Q’omercocha, all different sizes and scenic beauties.

During the Ausangate 7 Lakes Trek, we will also observe the snow-capped peaks of the tourist area, such as Ausangate (6,834 m/22,421 feet), Mariposa (5,842 m/19,166 feet), Jampa (5,500 m/18,044), Pucapunta (5,740 m/18,832 feet), Montaña Caracol (5,625 meters above sea level/18,454 feet), Tinki (5,300 meters/17,388 feet), and the entire Andean Mountain chain in the southwest of CUSCO.

The weather changes all the time! And it can snow, hail, rain, be full of clouds, or be a sunny day with a blue sky, etc.; It is essential to know that the temperature is freezing, so we recommend thermal clothing. “Better get ready to enjoy the adventure.”

The flora is typical of remote areas with little fauna, but we will find llamas and alpacas in quantity since they are ideal for all South Andean camelids. The views are incredible, with spectacular views of the different lakes as we return along the same hiking trails. Returning to the car park is easier and faster than returning to Pacchanta.

Around Pacchanta, we find several thermal baths to splash around, relaxing after an exhausting but beautiful walk through Ausangate to the end of the circuit of seven lakes in Ausangate, Cusco. In the afternoon, we return to Cusco on a 3-hour vehicle trip; we leave the hikers in their respective hotels.
