📋 Navigating the New Machu Picchu Circuits & Regulations

Planning a day trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu requires a smart ticketing strategy. To protect the Inca sanctuary and improve the flow of travelers, Peru’s Ministry of Culture operates under a strict system featuring 3 main tourist circuits divided into 10 unique sub-routes.

As local expert operators, we keep our itineraries up to date to ensure the best possible experience for your travel dates. Here is what you need to know about the current routes to choose the perfect match for your vacation.

🏔️ Circuit 1: The Panoramic Route (For Hikers and Photographers)

If your dream is to capture the vast, sweeping landscapes of the Andes framing the ancient citadel, Circuit 1 is your best choice. This elevated path loops through the upper terraces, making it perfect for photography enthusiasts, active hikers, and those seeking unique mountain trails. Please note: This circuit focuses on high viewpoints and does not enter the inner-urban ruins of the citadel.

  • Route 1-A (Machu Picchu Mountain Peak): The ultimate high-altitude challenge. This steep trek rewards you with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire canyon and the Inca city from the absolute highest summit.
  • Route 1-B (Upper Terrace Short Path): The quickest and easiest way to secure the legendary Instagram postcard photo from the famous Guardian’s House without a long, strenuous hike.
  • Route 1-C (Intipunku / Sun Gate Viewpoint): This trail lets you hike to the traditional gateway used by those arriving from the classic Inca Trail, providing a deeply historic perspective of the sanctuary.
  • Route 1-D (Inca Bridge Adventure): A fascinating short walk along a narrow cliffside trail that showcases brilliant Inca military engineering and territorial control.

📸 Circuit 2: The Classic Machu Picchu Experience (Most Popular)

This is the ultimate route for first-time visitors who want the iconic postcard photo. It takes you through the heart of the urban and religious sectors.

  • Route 2-A (Classic Gateway): Grants complete access to the upper and lower platforms of the famous Inca Guard House. From here, you will explore the Granite Chaos, the unique Water Mirrors Set, and Pisonay Square under the shadow of the sacred mountains.
  • Route 2-B (The Full Citadel Walk): Offers the same panoramic postcard view from the lower terrace of the Guard House, expanding your walking tour into the Temple Square, the Sacred Rock, the East Barns, and the architectural wonders of the Twelve Trapezoidal Windows.

👑 Circuit 3: The Royalty & Hiking Circuit

If the classic Circuit 2 tickets are sold out, or if you are looking for an active trekking challenge, Circuit 3 explores the lower royal sectors of the citadel and serves as the gateway to the sacred peaks.

  • Route 3-A (Huayna Picchu Mountain Challenge): Designed for adventure lovers. This route covers the lower agricultural areas, the Temple of the Sun, and the House of the Inca, before starting the steep, thrilling climb up Huayna Picchu Mountain.
  • Route 3-D (Huchuy Picchu Route): A gentler hiking alternative. It guides you through the main water sources, the sacred fountains, and the Royal Enclosures, paired with a short, scenic trek up the Huchuy Picchu summit.

💡 Local Insider Tips for Your Day Trip

  • Strict Entry Windows: Entry times printed on your official admission ticket have a strict 30-minute grace period during the regular season and a 45-minute grace period during peak months. Arriving later means losing access to the citadel.
  • Secure Your Spot Early: Daily visitor caps are highly regulated to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage site. We strongly advise booking your full-day tour at least 60 to 90 days in advance to guarantee your preferred circuit path.

What to Pack for Your Machu Picchu Day Trip

  • Original passport!
  • A comfortable 35-liter daypack with a belt for day trips and explorations that can hold all of your belongings
  • If you want to keep your belongings dry, a rain cover for your backpack is necessary.
  • Bring enough padlocks to lock each double zipper and secure your essentials.
  • Bottle of water. We suggest buying large bottles and pouring the water into a reusable bottle. Using plastic bottles is not allowed in Machu Picchu.
  • There are many steps and uneven cobblestone surfaces, and the rain can make the stones slick. Wear sturdy walking or hiking boots.
  • Storm-proof coat. Here, time moves exceptionally quickly. The best thing to do is always to carry a good poncho. This is important during the rainy months from December to March.
  • A warm coat. Between June and September, temperatures can drop significantly at night and in the morning. A good waterproof and windproof jacket is recommended.
  • A lightweight, waterproof, windproof jacket layered under a warm fleece is a great alternative.
  • Good sunscreen and a sun hat are essential in Peru. The country is at high altitude and close to the equator. This means sunburns can be very uncomfortable. Beware: even if it’s cloudy here, you’ll get badly burned.
  • Insect protection, especially for this outdoor activity
  • You can buy small first aid kits at pharmacies in Cusco and other towns. These kits have supplies for cuts, bruises, and upset stomachs. However, please bring enough prescription medications, as Peru may not carry all brands and varieties of medicine.
  • Sleeping on a bus, on a train, or in a noisy room requires earplugs.
  • A camera with ample memory and a long-lasting battery can capture all the lovely pictures!
  • Cash in local currency to purchase items.
  • You’ll need extra cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping your Kondor Path Tour staff.

FAQs about the Machu Picchu Full Day Tour from Cusco (Updated for 2026)

Everything you need to know about our Machu Picchu Full Day Tour — the fastest and most efficient way to visit the citadel from Cusco in a single day. Below are the most up-to-date answers for 2026, including the new circuit system, official entrance fees, the SERNANP conservation fee effective May 1, 2026, train logistics, and what to expect from a 10-hour day trip.

Our Machu Picchu Full Day Tour is a private 10-hour day trip from Cusco that takes you directly to the citadel and back the same day. You begin with an early morning pickup at your Cusco hotel, board the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, ride the Consettur shuttle bus up to the citadel, enjoy a 2-hour private guided tour on Circuit 2 (Classic Route), and return to Cusco that same evening. The Full Day Tour is ideal for travelers with limited time who want the iconic Machu Picchu experience without overnight stays. Trip length: 10 hours. Maximum altitude reached: 2,065 m (6,774 ft) at Machu Picchu itself. Physical level: easy.

The Full Day Tour is the fastest, most affordable option — perfect if you only have one day available. It does not include Sacred Valley sites or an overnight stay, just the round-trip journey and the citadel visit. Our 2 Day Tour adds a relaxed Sacred Valley exploration on Day 1 and an overnight in Aguas Calientes, with a calmer pace and better photo light. Our 3 Day Tour adds an extra day for full cultural immersion. For travelers with one day only, especially well-acclimatized to Cusco, the Full Day Tour delivers the iconic experience efficiently.

Our Full Day Tour uses Circuit 2 – Classic Route (Ruta 2), the most complete itinerary available to general visitors. This route includes the iconic postcard photo from the upper terrace, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, the Intihuatana sundial, the Three Windows Temple, and the Sacred Rock. Since 2024 Machu Picchu has been divided into three official one-way circuits — Panoramic (1), Classic (2), and Royalty (3). Choosing the wrong circuit means missing key sectors. If you prefer the Panoramic or Royalty circuit, tell us at booking and we will adjust your ticket.

For 2026 the official entrance fees set by Peru’s Ministry of Culture (Resolution Nº 000284-2025-MC) are: S/152 (~USD 40) for foreign adults on standard circuits, and S/200 (~USD 53) for circuits that include Huayna Picchu Mountain, Machu Picchu Mountain, or the Great Cavern. Starting May 1, 2026, SERNANP added a mandatory conservation fee of S/11 for foreign adults (S/5 for nationals and foreign minors), bringing the total to roughly S/163 / USD 48. Children under 3 enter free. All official tickets are included in the price of our Full Day Tour, so you do not pay them separately.

The dry season from May to September offers the most reliable weather, sunny mornings, and minimal rain — critical for a single-day visit where you do not have a buffer day to compensate for bad weather. June, July, and August are peak — book at least 3 months ahead. April and October are excellent shoulder months. The rainy season from November to March brings frequent afternoon showers, but mornings are usually clear, which is when our Full Day Tour arrives at the citadel. February is the wettest. Temperatures at Machu Picchu range 17–24 °C year-round.

The Full Day Tour starts very early — pickup is typically between 3:30 and 4:30 AM at your Cusco hotel, depending on your assigned train. The early start is necessary to catch the first trains from Poroy or Ollantaytambo station and reach Machu Picchu by 09:30 AM. We provide a packed breakfast or arrange a brief breakfast stop. The day ends around 21:00 when you return to Cusco. If the early start is a deal-breaker for you, consider our 2 Day or 3 Day Tour, which allows you to overnight in Aguas Calientes and enter the citadel at a relaxed 8:00 AM after a normal night of sleep.

The price includes: private hotel pickup and drop-off in Cusco; private transfer to the train station (Poroy or Ollantaytambo, depending on schedule); round-trip scenic train tickets in tourist-class service; round-trip Consettur shuttle bus between Aguas Calientes and the citadel; official Machu Picchu entrance ticket on Circuit 2 with the new SERNANP fee included; a 2-hour private guided tour with a certified English-speaking guide; lunch in Aguas Calientes between the citadel visit and the return train; and all local taxes. Tips, optional mountain hikes (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain as upgrades), and breakfast are not included.

Pre-dawn pickup at your Cusco hotel (3:30–4:30 AM). Private transfer to the train station (typically Ollantaytambo, 1h45min from Cusco; sometimes Poroy depending on the train operator and schedule). Scenic train ride (1h30min) through the Urubamba canyon to Aguas Calientes. Consettur shuttle bus (25 min) up the zig-zag road to the citadel entrance. 2-hour private guided tour on Circuit 2 inside Machu Picchu. Free time for photography is built into the route. Return shuttle bus to Aguas Calientes. Lunch in a recommended restaurant in town. Return train (departing typically mid-afternoon). Private transfer back to your Cusco hotel, arriving around 20:30–21:00.

You spend approximately 3 to 3.5 hours total at the citadel — about 25 minutes for the bus ride up and entry checkpoint, 2 hours of regulated guided tour time on Circuit 2 (the maximum allowed since the new rules), and 25–30 minutes of buffer for photos and the bus back down. Once your guided tour ends, you must exit the citadel — Machu Picchu is now strictly one-way and no re-entry is permitted on the same ticket. If you want more time inside the citadel, our 2 Day Tour lets you book an additional entrance the following morning.

Yes — strongly recommended. Even though Machu Picchu itself sits at a comfortable 2,430 m (much lower than Cusco’s 3,350 m), the Full Day Tour starts in Cusco where you face altitude immediately. Arrive in Cusco at least 24 to 48 hours before the tour, drink coca tea, eat light meals, avoid alcohol, and walk slowly on Day 0. If you arrive late at night and take the Full Day Tour the next morning, the pre-dawn wake-up combined with altitude can be physically demanding. If you are concerned, our 3 Day Tour includes a built-in acclimatization day in Cusco.

Bring your original passport (checked at every checkpoint), a small day backpack under 5 kg for the train, comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, light layers (warm fleece for the early morning, t-shirt for midday at Machu Picchu), a waterproof jacket or poncho year-round (especially November–April), high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent for the cloud forest, sunglasses and a wide-brim hat, a reusable water bottle, personal medication, snacks for the train, and around 100–200 soles in cash for tips and small purchases. Drones, large tripods, and rigid-tip trekking poles are not allowed inside Machu Picchu.

Yes. Since the citadel reform, every visitor must enter accompanied by an officially certified tour guide, with a maximum ratio of 16 visitors per guide. Independent entry is no longer permitted. Our Full Day Tour always includes a private certified English-speaking guide for your group only — you do not share with strangers. Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request at no extra cost. Your guide handles every checkpoint, explains the architectural and astronomical meaning of each sector, and helps you take the best photos along Circuit 2.

The departure station depends on the train operator, the date, and seasonal scheduling. Ollantaytambo station (1h45min by road from Cusco) is the most common departure for both PeruRail and Inca Rail because trains from there are faster and operate year-round. Poroy station (20 min from Cusco) only operates during certain months. We assign your train at the time of booking and confirm the station 5 days before your departure date. Both options are included in the price — you do not pay extra for the longer transfer.

Both Inca Rail and PeruRail enforce a strict luggage limit of 5 kg (11 lb) or one carry-on bag plus a small handbag per passenger. Suitcases and large backpacks are not allowed on board. For a Full Day Tour you do not need much — just your day pack with passport, water, camera, snacks, rain layer, and small valuables. Leave the rest at your Cusco hotel; most hotels offer free luggage storage and the bags will be there when you return that evening.

It is not recommended on the Full Day Tour due to time constraints. Both mountain hikes take 2 to 3 hours, which would not fit alongside the 2-hour guided citadel tour and the strict return-train schedule. If your priority is climbing one of the mountains, choose our 2 Day Tour, which allows you to start the morning fresh after overnight in Aguas Calientes and have the full day to combine mountain plus citadel. The mountain upgrade costs an extra USD 95 per person and requires booking 3 to 4 months in advance for Huayna Picchu permits.

No. Each Machu Picchu ticket is single-use, and once you exit through the controlled checkpoint you cannot return on the same ticket. The Full Day Tour gives you one entry on Circuit 2. If you want to combine two different circuits in the same day — for example a panoramic view in the morning and the classic route afterward — you need to buy two separate entries, but this requires careful scheduling that does not typically fit a one-day round trip from Cusco. Two-entry visits are much easier on our 2 Day Tour.

Yes. In 2026 Machu Picchu allows a maximum of 5,600 visitors per day in high season (January–November and December 30–31) and 4,500 per day in low season, distributed across 10 sub-circuits with specific entry time slots. Because the Full Day Tour uses one of the most popular morning slots, we recommend booking at least 6 to 10 weeks ahead in high season (May–September) and 3 to 4 weeks ahead in low season. Your ticket has a fixed entry-time slot with a tolerance of 30 minutes (low season) or 45 minutes (high season) — after that you cannot enter.

The only official channel is the Ministry of Culture website tuboleto.cultura.pe. Physical sales counters operate in Cusco (Casa Garcilaso) and in Aguas Calientes (Pachacutec Avenue), but in 2026 most tickets are sold online and physical offices frequently show “sold out” days in advance during high season. When you book the Full Day Tour with Kondor Path Tours we secure your ticket on the date, circuit, and time slot of your choice as soon as your deposit is confirmed — you do not need to handle the official platform yourself.

Yes, but with caveats. The physical level is rated easy — most walking is on stone steps and gentle paths inside the citadel. The challenge is the pre-dawn start, which can be tough on younger children. For families with kids under 8, we generally recommend the 2 Day Tour instead because it lets children sleep a normal night in Aguas Calientes before the citadel visit. Children under 3 enter free year-round; children 3–17 receive approximately USD 20 discount on the entrance fee. Train operators offer a 20% discount for children aged 3 to 11.

Yes. Full-time university students with a valid ISIC card receive a discount of approximately USD 20 on the Machu Picchu entrance fee. Citizens of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela pay the promotional Andean Community rate of S/64 general / S/32 reduced instead of S/152. PeruRail and Inca Rail also offer reduced fares on selected trains. Send us a copy of your ID or ISIC card at booking and we apply every discount you qualify for to your final Full Day Tour price.

The Full Day Tour is more vulnerable to disruption than multi-day tours because everything must happen in one day. In the rare event of a railway suspension due to landslides, flooding, or strikes, we activate our contingency plan: depending on the situation, we either reroute via Hidroeléctrica (a longer but viable alternative), reschedule your tour for the next available date, or arrange a full refund of any unused portion. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for any single-day tour. Strikes in Peru can be announced with little notice, particularly between January and April.

The tour operates rain or shine. From November to April expect short, intense afternoon showers; mornings are usually clearer, which is exactly when our Full Day Tour arrives at the citadel. Bring a waterproof jacket or rain poncho and a waterproof cover for your backpack and camera. Cloud-forest mist can make the citadel more atmospheric and is excellent for photography. Machu Picchu rarely fully closes — only extreme weather has caused historical closures, and we monitor conditions and notify you in advance if any change is needed.

We recommend bringing 100 to 200 Peruvian soles (USD 27 to 55) in cash per person for the day. Breakdown: snacks and drinks on the train (~S/30), tips for your guide and driver (suggested 10% of the tour price in USD or soles), souvenirs at Aguas Calientes if interested (~S/40), restroom fees at the citadel (S/2), and a small emergency reserve. Lunch in Aguas Calientes is included, so you do not need cash for that. ATMs exist in Aguas Calientes but charge high fees — withdraw cash in Cusco before departure.

Bookings cancelled 30 or more days before departure receive a refund of 80% of the deposit (the remaining 20% covers non-refundable train tickets and Machu Picchu permits already issued in your name). Cancellations made 15 to 29 days before departure receive 50%. Cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable but the booking can be rescheduled within 12 months at no extra cost, subject to availability and any price difference. Travel insurance from World Nomads or comparable providers is strongly recommended. Full terms are on our Terms and Conditions page.

For high season (May to September and December 20 to January 5), book 3 to 4 months in advance. This guarantees your preferred train schedule, the early-morning slot in Circuit 2, and locks in the current pricing before any seasonal increases. For shoulder season (April, October, November), 6 to 8 weeks is usually safe. For January to March (rainy season), 3 to 4 weeks is enough except around Peruvian holidays such as Carnaval and Holy Week. Last-minute bookings (under 2 weeks) are sometimes possible but limited to whatever trains and slots remain available.
