Breakfast before pickup: standard hotel breakfast time works perfectly. Most Urubamba hotels serve breakfast 06:30-09:30 AM. Eat at your normal pace.

Stop 1 — Ollantaytambo Fortress + Living City (~90-105 minutes)

A 15-20 minute drive from Urubamba brings us to Ollantaytambo — typically the first stop because of its geographic proximity to Urubamba.

Strategic timing advantage: arriving at Ollantaytambo around 10:00-10:15 AM, after the early Cusco-based tour groups have already moved through. Less crowded experience.

On this stop:

First, the village itself (~20-25 minutes)

Before the fortress climb, we wander the old town center:

• The Plaza de Armas, lined with traditional buildings
• Working Inca water channels, part of an irrigation system that predates the Incas themselves
• Original Inca stonework built into house foundations
• Everyday Quechua life — vendors, children playing, weavers at work

Ollantaytambo is the only Sacred Valley town still laid out on its original Inca grid, designed under Pachacutec around 1450.

Section B: The fortress-temple climb (~60-75 minutes)

The site rises dramatically above the village. Some archaeologists rate Ollantaytambo as more impressive than Machu Picchu for its sheer scale and engineering ambition.

Highlights along the way:

• 17 tiers of terracing climbing the mountainside
• The Sun Temple, its six pink granite blocks — each over 50 tons — hauled from a quarry 6 km away, across the Urubamba
• Roughly 200 Inca stone steps connecting the terrace levels
• The Pinkuylluna granaries, Inca storage structures visible across the valley
• Baño de la Ñusta, a ceremonial bath carved from Inca stone
• A carved Inca ceremonial seat near the top

A bit of history: this was one of the rare sites where the Inca actually beat back the Spanish, in 1537, under Manco Inca vs. Hernando Pizarro using flood tactics).

On pacing: your guide sets the speed based on how the group is doing. Travelers with limited mobility can stop at intermediate levels — the views are excellent from lower platforms too.

Stop 2 — Moray Inca Terraces (~45-60 minutes)

A 45-minute drive from Ollantaytambo (through scenic Sacred Valley landscape) brings us to Moray — the Inca agricultural amphitheater.

What you’ll experience:

The circular terraces:

• Three large concentric circular terrace formations carved into natural earth depressions
• The deepest crater descends ~30 meters
• Temperature differential top-to-bottom: up to 15°C — equivalent to traveling sea-level to 1,000m altitude

The agricultural laboratory function:

• The Incas used Moray to experiment with crop adaptation to different microclimates
• They created climate-resistant strains of potatoes, corn, and other crops that fed the entire Andean empire
• Each terrace level represents a different “altitude” for testing crop varieties

Photography:

• View from the rim provides the iconic concentric circles shot
• Optional descent into the largest crater for the immersive experience (15-20 minutes additional)
• Mid-late morning light creates dramatic shadows on the terrace curves

Stop 3 — Maras Salt Mines / Salineras (~60-75 minutes)

A 20-minute drive from Moray brings us to Maras — one of the most photographed sites in Peru.

What’s waiting at this stop:

Inside the Salineras:

• More than 4,500 individual salt pools, carved into the mountainside
• All fed by one underground saline spring, in continuous use for over 500 years
• Each pool belongs to a different local family, part of a long-running community tradition
• The pools form white-and-tan geometric patterns cascading down the slope

What you can do here:

• Walk the upper pools (steep dirt paths — wear sturdy shoes)
• Photograph the geometric pool patterns (best in the dry season, May-September)
• Pick up genuine Maras pink salt directly from the community (S/10-30 per bag, supporting the families who work the pools)
• Ask your guide about the harvesting process
• Pay the S/20 community entrance fee in cash at the gate

Lunch is NOT included — but we make a strategic stop with your guide’s recommendations based on:

Stop 4 — Chinchero Ruins (~60 minutes)

A 30-minute drive from Maras (passing through agricultural landscapes) brings us to Chinchero at 3,762 m — the highest altitude site of the day.

What’s included in this stop:

First, the colonial church (~20 minutes)

The Iglesia de Chinchero, a 17th-century church, sits directly atop the foundations of Tupac Yupanqui’s Inca palace. It’s a striking architectural mix: Spanish colonial masonry built directly on top of Inca stone foundations.

What’s inside:

• 1600s frescoes blending Andean and Christian imagery, painted by Cusqueña School artists
• A hand-carved wooden altar finished in gold leaf, with indigenous motifs woven in
• Religious artwork that mixes Catholic and Andean symbolism
• Inca stonework still visible at the base of the walls

Then, the terraces and viewpoint (~25-30 minutes)

A short walk past the village brings you to the Inca terraces and Chinchero’s well-known viewpoint.

• On clear days, you can see the Salkantay glacier (6,271 m) across the valley
• One of the iconic photography spots of the Cusco region
• Andean villages visible across the plateau

Stop 5 — OPTIONAL: Chinchero Textiles (~25-30 minutes)

At Chinchero, we offer the optional addition of the traditional weaving experience with the local Quechua community:

What you’ll experience:

• Live demonstration of the complete weaving process — from raw alpaca wool to finished textile
• Natural dyeing using local plants (cochineal for red, indigo for blue, herbs for various colors) — the colorful display is one of the most photographed elements
• The backstrap loom — traditional weaving device used unchanged for 1000+ years
• Direct-from-weaver textile purchase at fair prices

Why this is optional: some travelers want to skip the textiles cooperative (which can feel like a sales venue). Others find it the cultural highlight of the day. Choose at booking or decide on the day.

Quechua-speaking guides (request at booking) can translate for genuine community interactions.

Drive time from Chinchero: ~30 minutes back to Urubamba area.

Option B: Drop-off in Cusco (~18:30-19:00 PM)

• Continuing to Cusco for next phase
• Direct continuation, no need to arrange separate Sacred Valley→Cusco transfer

Option C: Drop-off at Ollantaytambo train station (~17:00 PM) — USP UNIQUE

For travelers continuing to Machu Picchu by train.

Drive time from Chinchero: ~40 minutes to Ollantaytambo train station.

Why this matters:

• The train to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) departs from Ollantaytambo station (not Cusco)
• Standard Machu Picchu trains: 15:00, 16:36, 19:00 PM departures
• Without our drop-off: you’d need to backtrack from Cusco or Urubamba to Ollantaytambo train station separately
• With our drop-off: walk straight from tour to train → Machu Picchu Pueblo same evening

How to coordinate:

• Mention at booking
• Confirm your train ticket time (we coordinate day’s pacing to ensure timely arrival)
• Pack overnight bag for Machu Picchu (leave main luggage at Urubamba hotel)

This is logistically the most efficient pattern for the Urubamba → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu itinerary.
