Choquequirao Trek 6 Days – Lodge Experience to Machu Picchu

6 Day Choquequirao Trek Lodge Tour – Uncover Peru’s mysteries while taking in breathtaking views of the Andes on this memorable six-day Choquequirao Trek Lodge experience. Come to explore with us!
A remote alternative to the Inca Trail with the comfort of local lodges.
This 6-day Choquequirao trek is one of the most rewarding journeys in the Peruvian Andes, combining remote landscapes, rich history, and a quieter alternative to more crowded routes. Far from the typical турист trail, you’ll hike through deep canyons, high mountain passes, and traditional Andean villages on your way to one of the least visited Inca cities.
What makes this experience special is the lodge-to-lodge format. Instead of camping, you’ll spend your nights in small, locally managed lodges where you can rest comfortably, enjoy freshly prepared meals, and connect with the people who live along this remote route.
Along the way, you’ll explore Choquequirao — often considered the sister city of Machu Picchu — before continuing your journey toward the iconic citadel itself. This combination offers a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of the Inca world, far beyond a single destination.
With experienced local guides leading the way, this trek is ideal for travelers seeking a meaningful adventure that blends physical challenge, cultural connection, and a more authentic side of Peru.

6-Day Choquequirao Trek Lodge Tour: Uncover the mystery of the majestic Choquequirao ruins on this action-packed six-day trek to Machu Picchu! Enjoy breathtaking views, unique local culture, and many unforgettable Andean experiences.
This Choquequirao lodge trek is not just another hike in Peru — it’s a journey into one of the most remote and least visited Inca sites in the Andes. Unlike crowded routes, here you’ll walk through silent valleys, cross deep canyons, and experience landscapes that feel completely untouched.
What truly sets this experience apart is the combination of adventure and comfort. Instead of camping every night, you’ll stay in small, family-run lodges along the route. This allows you to rest properly, enjoy warm meals, and connect with local communities who still live far from modern infrastructure.
It’s also one of the few treks where you can visit both Choquequirao — often called Machu Picchu’s “sacred sister city” — and continue all the way to Machu Picchu itself. That combination makes this journey deeper, more immersive, and far less commercial than other popular routes.
This trek is ideal for travelers seeking something beyond the typical tourist experience. If you enjoy hiking in remote places, value authentic cultural encounters, and don’t mind a physical challenge, this route is a perfect match.
It’s especially suited for people who want to avoid the crowds of the Inca Trail while still exploring impressive Inca ruins. The daily hikes can be demanding due to long distances and elevation changes, so a reasonable level of fitness and some prior acclimatization to altitude are important.
At the same time, the lodge-based format makes it more comfortable than traditional camping treks. If you like the idea of daytime adventure and a proper bed and meal at night, this experience offers the best of both worlds.
Choosing a lodge-based trek completely changes the experience. After long hiking days, having a real bed, a hot meal, and shelter from the cold makes a huge difference in how you recover and enjoy the journey.
Lodges also provide a more personal and cultural experience. Many are operated by local families, giving you the chance to interact, learn about their way of life, and support communities that live in these remote regions.
From a practical point of view, traveling lodge to lodge means carrying less gear and avoiding the logistics of setting up camp every day. This allows you to focus more on the landscapes, the history, and the overall experience rather than the effort of camping.
In short, you still get the adventure of a challenging trek — but with a level of comfort and authenticity that makes the journey far more enjoyable.
Both the Choquequirao trek and the Inca Trail offer unforgettable journeys through the Andes, but they deliver very different experiences. Choosing between them depends on what kind of adventure you’re looking for.
The Inca Trail is the most famous route to Machu Picchu, known for its well-preserved paths, archaeological sites along the way, and the iconic entrance through the Sun Gate. It’s a great option if you want a classic trekking experience with historical highlights and a structured route. However, it is also more crowded and requires booking permits months in advance.
The Choquequirao trek, on the other hand, is far more remote and less traveled. It takes you deep into the Apurímac Canyon, where you’ll encounter vast landscapes, quiet trails, and a stronger sense of isolation. Instead of following a busy path, you’ll experience a more raw and authentic side of the Andes.
Another key difference is the level of difficulty. The Choquequirao route is generally more demanding, with longer distances and steeper climbs. It’s better suited for travelers who are physically prepared and looking for a more challenging trek.
If you prefer a well-known route with easier logistics and a strong historical narrative, the Inca Trail is a solid choice. But if you’re seeking fewer crowds, deeper immersion, and a unique journey that combines Choquequirao with Machu Picchu, this trek offers something truly special.

This experience is designed to take care of every detail, from transportation and expert guidance to meals and lodge accommodations along the route. You can focus on enjoying the trek while we handle the logistics.
This trek is considered moderate to challenging due to long distances, steep ascents, and high temperatures in the canyon. It is more physically demanding than the Inca Trail, so a good level of fitness and proper acclimatization are highly recommended.
The classic route covers approximately 60–65 km (37–40 miles). This 6-day itinerary allows for a more gradual pace while continuing toward Machu Picchu.
Choquequirao sits at around 3,033 meters (9,950 feet) above sea level. However, the trek involves significant elevation changes, including a descent into the Apurímac Canyon and a climb back up.
Some travelers may feel mild symptoms due to altitude changes. Spending at least 2 days in Cusco before the trek, staying hydrated, and hiking at a steady pace can help reduce the risk.
The climate varies throughout the route. Days can be warm in the canyon and cooler at higher elevations, while nights are usually cold. The dry season (April to October) offers the best conditions, although rain is always possible.
This trek is not recommended for complete beginners. It is better suited for travelers with some hiking experience who are comfortable walking several hours per day in mountainous terrain.
The lodge option offers more comfort, including proper beds, meals, and shelter. It helps you recover better each day of hiking while still enjoying a remote, authentic trekking experience.
It is possible to hike independently, but most travelers choose a guided tour for safety, logistics, and a deeper understanding of the history and landscapes along the route.
Essential items include comfortable hiking clothes, a warm jacket, rain protection, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and personal items. A detailed packing list is usually provided after booking.
Unlike the Inca Trail, this trek does not have strict permit limits, but booking in advance is recommended to secure availability and plan your trip smoothly.
Yes, this route connects both archaeological sites in one journey, offering a more complete and less crowded alternative to traditional treks.
Choquequirao offers a more remote and less crowded experience, while Machu Picchu is more accessible and fully restored. Visiting both in one trek allows you to experience two of the most important Inca sites in a unique way.
