How Many Days in Cusco Before Machu Picchu?

It’s advisable to spend at least two days in Cusco to acclimate to the altitude and explore the city. High altitude can affect visitors, so gradual acclimatization is key to preventing altitude sickness. Engage in light activities on your first day and drink coca tea, a local remedy for altitude-related symptoms.

Take the opportunity to explore Cusco’s vibrant streets, lined with Spanish colonial architecture and Incan stonework. The city’s unique blend of cultures is evident in its art, music, and festivals, offering a fascinating prelude to your Machu Picchu adventure.

What to See in Cusco

  • Sacsayhuamán: This impressive Inca fortress offers not only historical intrigue but also stunning views of the city below. The sheer size of the stones used in its construction is awe-inspiring. Take a guided tour to learn about its historical significance and the Inca’s architectural prowess.
  • San Pedro Market: Immerse yourself in local life at this bustling market. Sample traditional foods like empanadas and tamales, and browse stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. It’s an excellent place to purchase souvenirs and interact with the friendly locals.
  • Qorikancha: Once the most important temple in the Inca Empire, Qorikancha was dedicated to the Sun God. Today, its remnants are integrated into the Convent of Santo Domingo, showcasing the fusion of Incan and colonial architecture. Explore its history through the museum’s exhibits and admire its beautifully landscaped gardens.

Everything you need to know about our 5 Day Premiere Machu Picchu Tour — the most comprehensive Machu Picchu vacation package in our catalog combining Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, AND Rainbow Mountain (with horseback assistance on the ascent for accessibility) at a relaxed premium pace. With upgraded 4-star hotels, Vistadome train service, and certified bilingual guides throughout. Below are the most up-to-date answers for 2026, including the day-by-day itinerary, the unique horse-assisted Rainbow Mountain experience that makes the iconic 5,100 m destination accessible to all fitness levels, and how this package differs from our shorter Machu Picchu tours.

The 5 Day Premiere Machu Picchu Tour is the most comprehensive Machu Picchu package in our catalog — a fully-organized 5-day, 4-night vacation that combines Cusco’s historical highlights, the Sacred Valley’s archaeological treasures, the iconic Machu Picchu citadel, AND the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca, 5,100 m) — accessed with horseback support on the ascent and on foot for the descent. The package includes all transport, accommodations (4-star Premiere-class hotels), guided tours, train tickets (Vistadome class), Machu Picchu entrance, Rainbow Mountain entrance + horse + horseman, and a dedicated bilingual guide. Total duration: 5 days, 4 nights. Physical level: easy to moderate at most sites; moderate at Rainbow Mountain with horseback assistance. Ideal for first-time visitors, families, seniors, and travelers who want to see ALL the iconic destinations of the Cusco region in comfortable style.

“Premiere” refers to our upgraded service tier across every component: (1) Upgraded 4-star hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes (vs 3-star in standard packages); (2) Vistadome train service with panoramic glass-domed roof, complimentary snacks, and onboard entertainment (vs standard Expedition train); (3) Private vehicle transport for the Sacred Valley and station transfers (vs shared transport); (4) Horseback assistance with personal horseman on the Rainbow Mountain ascent (a significant premium service); (5) Smaller group sizes at archaeological sites; (6) Senior bilingual guides with 5+ years of regional experience; (7) Welcome cocktail at the Cusco hotel and a celebratory dinner the final evening. Premiere is one tier above standard packages but below our top-tier Belmond Hiram Bingham luxury package — the sweet spot between comfort and value.

Brief orientation meeting with your guide. Day 2: Cusco City Tour — Qoricancha (Sun Temple), Cusco Cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and the four Inca sites above the city (Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay). Afternoon free for additional acclimatization. Day 3: Rainbow Mountain Day — pre-dawn pickup, drive to the Vinicunca trailhead (~3 hours), horseback ascent with personal horseman to Rainbow Mountain summit (5,100 m), time at the summit for photography, descent on foot, lunch at Cusipata, return to Cusco. Day 4: Sacred Valley Full Day — Pisac archaeological site and market, traditional Andean buffet lunch in Urubamba, Ollantaytambo fortress. Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, overnight at 4-star hotel. Day 5: Machu Picchu Day — early shuttle bus to Machu Picchu, 3-hour guided tour, free time at the citadel, return train to Ollantaytambo, transfer to Cusco airport for departure.

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca, 5,100 m) requires significant physical effort to reach on foot — the ascent from the trailhead is approximately 6 km of steady uphill walking at altitudes between 4,600 m and 5,100 m, taking most travelers 2–3 hours. Our Premiere package includes horseback service with a personal horseman (arriero) for the ENTIRE ASCENT, dramatically reducing physical exertion. The horseman walks alongside guiding the horse on the trail, ensuring safety on uneven terrain. You ride from the trailhead to within ~150 meters of the actual summit viewpoint (the final ridge must be walked because the trail is too steep for horses). The descent is on foot — significantly easier than the ascent because of the downward slope. Walking poles and oxygen are included. This horseback service makes Rainbow Mountain accessible to children 8+, seniors, and travelers without trekking experience.

Two practical reasons. (1) Safety: descending steep mountain terrain on horseback is significantly more dangerous than ascending — the angle of the slope causes weight shift forward, which can destabilize the rider and stress the horse. Walking down is much safer. (2) Energy economics: the ascent at high altitude is the physically demanding portion (going uphill at 4,800–5,100 m is when oxygen scarcity affects performance most). The descent is comparatively easy because gravity assists, oxygen demand is lower, and you have already reached the iconic summit. Walking down also takes only 1–1.5 hours vs 2–3 hours up. This pattern (horse up, walk down) is standard for Andean horseback tours and is recommended by both horsemen and our certified guides.

Significantly more accessible than the standard trek, but altitude still matters. Suitable for: children aged 8+ (under adult supervision, our horsemen are exceptionally experienced); seniors in good cardiovascular health; travelers who don’t trek regularly; honeymooners and casual travelers; photographers wanting energy reserves at the summit. Not suitable for: pregnant women (riding at 5,100 m is contraindicated); travelers with severe cardiovascular conditions (the altitude impact remains significant regardless of horseback transport); travelers with mobility limitations affecting balance (mounting and dismounting the horse requires basic balance); anyone with hip, knee, or back conditions that make horseback travel uncomfortable. We carry medical-grade oxygen for all participants.

The 4 Day Machu Picchu Express Tour packs Machu Picchu + Sacred Valley + Rainbow Mountain (trekked on foot) into 4 active days — adventure-focused, fast pace, designed for fit travelers who want the challenge. The 5 Day Premiere includes the same Machu Picchu + Sacred Valley + Rainbow Mountain destinations but with three key upgrades: (1) Rainbow Mountain by horseback (accessible to all fitness levels); (2) Extra Cusco day with full city tour(3) Premium service throughout (4-star hotels, Vistadome train, private transfers). Choose the 4 Day Express if you’re fit and want adventure compression; choose the 5 Day Premiere if you want comprehensive coverage with maximum accessibility.

The 2 Day Tour compresses Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu into a fast 2-day round trip — designed for travelers with very limited time. The 5 Day Premiere includes the same Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu destinations PLUS Cusco City Tour PLUS Rainbow Mountain by horseback PLUS proper acclimatization PLUS free time, all at a premium service level. The 2 Day is about efficient sightseeing only; the 5 Day is about comprehensive Cusco regional coverage. Choose the 2 Day if time is tightly constrained; choose the 5 Day if you have a full week and want quality breadth.

The 3 Day Cultural Immersion Tour focuses on Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu with deeper cultural engagement but doesn’t include Cusco City Tour or Rainbow Mountain. The 5 Day Premiere covers Cusco City + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu + Rainbow Mountain by horse with broader breadth, premium service, and built-in flexibility. The 3 Day is about cultural depth; the 5 Day is about comprehensive iconic coverage. Both are valid depending on whether you prefer depth in fewer destinations or breadth across the region’s highlights.

The half-day Cusco City Tour visits: Qoricancha (the Inca Sun Temple, partially preserved beneath the Santo Domingo convent — features the famous walls cut to within 1 mm precision); the Cusco Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas (Baroque architecture, the famous “Cuy Cena” painting of the Last Supper featuring guinea pig); the four Inca sites above the citySacsayhuaman (cyclopean megalithic fortress, host of the annual Inti Raymi festival), Q’enqo (ceremonial site with underground altars), Puca Pucara (military checkpoint), and Tambomachay (the “Inca Baths” — sacred water shrine). The afternoon is free for independent exploration and additional acclimatization before the Rainbow Mountain day.

The Sacred Valley Full Day visits: Pisac (the dramatic archaeological complex above the modern town — terraces, ceremonial center, and the largest Inca cemetery, plus the famous artisan market); Urubamba for a traditional Andean buffet lunch featuring native potatoes, quinoa, alpaca, and trout; Ollantaytambo (the spectacular Inca fortress that successfully resisted Spanish conquistadors). Some itineraries also include Chinchero (textile community + colonial church on an Inca temple). The day ends with Vistadome train transfer to Aguas Calientes for the overnight before Machu Picchu. Same content as our standalone Sacred Valley Full Day Tour.

The Vistadome is PeruRail’s premium tourist train service between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes. Features: panoramic glass-domed roof and oversized windows for unobstructed views of the Urubamba river canyon; leather seats with extra legroomcomplimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinkstraditional Andean entertainment on the return journey (dance performance, fashion show featuring alpaca textiles); professional bilingual hosts. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes each way. The Vistadome is one tier above the standard Expedition train but below the ultra-luxury Belmond Hiram Bingham.

We use partner hotels in the 4-star Premiere tier in both Cusco and Aguas Calientes. Cusco options: Casa Cartagena Boutique HotelBelmond Hotel Monasterio (upgrade), Costa del Sol Wyndham Cusco, or Sonesta Cusco — all centrally located, with modern amenities, oxygen-enriched rooms (for altitude), heated bathrooms, and breakfast included. Aguas Calientes options: El MaPi by InkaterraCasa del Sol Machu Picchu, or Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel — all near the train station and bus terminal for Machu Picchu. Specific hotel selection depends on availability at booking time. We can upgrade to 5-star luxury with notice (+$200-500 per night).

Comprehensive package includes: private airport transfers4 nights of 4-star Premiere hotel accommodation with breakfast (3 nights Cusco + 1 night Aguas Calientes); all guided tours with certified bilingual guides (Cusco City, Rainbow Mountain, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu); all entrance fees (Boleto Turístico Integral S/130, Qoricancha S/15, Cusco Cathedral S/40, Rainbow Mountain community fee S/25, Machu Picchu S/152 + SERNANP S/11); horseback service + personal horseman (arriero) on Rainbow Mountain ascentround-trip Vistadome train tickets Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes; shuttle bus tickets from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu; traditional Andean buffet lunches on Rainbow Mountain day and Sacred Valley day; welcome cocktail and final celebratory dinner in Cusco; medical-grade oxygen kit. Not included: international flights, travel insurance, tips, additional meals not specified, and personal expenses.

The 5 Day Premiere is rated easy to moderate overall, with one moderate-difficulty day (Rainbow Mountain). Daily physical activity: (1) Cusco City Tour Day 2: 3–4 hours of walking on cobblestone streets and sites at 3,350 m. (2) Rainbow Mountain Day 3moderate difficulty even with horse — horseback ascent is comfortable but altitude (5,100 m) affects everyone; descent on foot is 1–1.5 hours of downhill walking; you also need to walk the final ~150 meters to the summit viewpoint where the trail is too steep for horses. (3) Sacred Valley Day 4: 2–3 hours walking at sites between 2,800–3,000 m. (4) Machu Picchu Day 5: 3 hours walking at the citadel at 2,430 m. Travelers in basic fitness with no severe altitude sensitivity complete the package comfortably.

The structured altitude profile is one of the key advantages of this package — especially important because of Rainbow Mountain at 5,100 m. Day 1: arrival at Cusco (3,350 m) with rest day — body begins adapting. Day 2: Cusco City Tour (3,350 m + Sacsayhuaman to 3,600 m) — gentle activity builds altitude tolerance. Day 3: Rainbow Mountain (5,100 m) — by Day 3, you’ve had 2 full days at Cusco altitude, the minimum recommended for safely visiting 5,100 m. Day 4: Sacred Valley (2,800–3,000 m) — strategic descent aids recovery from Rainbow Mountain exertion. Day 5: Machu Picchu (2,430 m) — even lower altitude, easy on the body. This sequencing puts the highest altitude exposure (Rainbow) AFTER adequate Cusco acclimatization, then descends progressively for recovery.

Excellent for families. The 5 Day Premiere is one of our most family-friendly comprehensive packages for several reasons: (1) Rainbow Mountain accessible by horse — children 8+ can experience the iconic 5,100 m destination without trekking exhaustion; (2) No demanding hikes elsewhere(3) Built-in rest days — Day 1 acclimatization, free afternoons; (4) Variety of activities — markets, train ride, dramatic citadels, horseback adventure — keeps children engaged; (5) Comfortable hotels with proper beds, kid-friendly meals, swimming pools. Recommended for children aged 8 and older (the Rainbow Mountain altitude limit); younger children would need to skip Rainbow Mountain or use the horse only briefly. We can adapt the itinerary for families with toddlers.

Excellent for seniors — our best-suited comprehensive Machu Picchu package for travelers over 60. Reasons: (1) Rainbow Mountain by horse — eliminates the cardiovascular demand of trekking at 5,100 m, making the iconic destination accessible; (2) Premium hotels with elevators, comfortable beds, modern amenities; (3) Private vehicle transport — no long bus rides; (4) Acclimatization day built into Day 1; (5) Vistadome train — significantly more comfortable than standard; (6) Premium guides adjusting pace naturally. Senior travelers with heart conditions or severe respiratory issues should consult their doctor before any 5,100 m exposure regardless of horseback transport. The horse makes Rainbow accessible for healthy seniors who could not otherwise complete the trek.

The Premiere package operates with small shared groups (maximum 12 travelers) for the guided tours, but with private hotel rooms and private airport transfers. For travelers wanting fully private experience (private guide and private vehicle for all tours), the upgrade to Premiere Private is approximately 60-80% more expensive per person but unlocks: customized departure times, flexible pacing, ability to extend or skip activities, private guide attention, complete itinerary customization, and a private horse/horseman team on Rainbow Mountain day. Particularly valuable for families with young children, seniors with specific needs, multi-generational groups, honeymoons, and travelers wanting solitude.

Our certified guides offer the tour primarily in English and Spanish, both available on all departures. For private Premiere packages, we can arrange guides in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, or Hebrew at no extra cost subject to availability — request at least 48 hours in advance. All guides hold official certification from DIRCETUR, have degrees in tourism, archaeology, anthropology, or Andean studies, and have 5+ years of experience. The Rainbow Mountain horsemen typically speak Spanish and Quechua but interact mainly through gestures and trust — they are highly experienced with international visitors.

The tour operates year-round. Dry season (May to September): clear views at Rainbow Mountain (the colors are most vivid in direct sun) and Machu Picchu, optimal photography, cold but sunny days at Cusco, peak demand. June, July, August are peak — book 2–3 months ahead. Shoulder seasons (April, October): arguably the best — fewer crowds at all sites, vivid landscapes, mostly reliable weather. Rainy season (November to March): lush green landscapes, dramatic cloud formations at Machu Picchu, occasional rain or snow at Rainbow Mountain (which can dim the colors), fewer tourists, lower prices. January and February have the highest rain at Rainbow Mountain — sometimes the colors are partially obscured. The 5-day pace works in all seasons.

Day 1 is intentionally designed as your arrival day — flight typically lands mid-morning or afternoon, private transfer takes you directly to your Premiere hotel, and the rest of Day 1 is for rest, hydration, and gentle exploration. We do NOT schedule any tours on Day 1 because altitude impact is most severe in the first 12-24 hours — and Rainbow Mountain on Day 3 at 5,100 m makes proper Day 1 rest essential. The guide does a brief evening orientation meeting at the hotel. By Day 2 (Cusco City Tour), most travelers feel comfortable for gentle walking. Day 3 (Rainbow Mountain) is the most challenging — properly resting Days 1–2 is critical.

Essential items: comfortable walking shoes (for archaeological sites) PLUS sturdy hiking shoes (for Rainbow Mountain — even with horse, the final summit walk and descent require grip); layered clothing — Cusco mornings 5°C, midday 20°C, Rainbow Mountain can be below freezing; warm hat and gloves for Rainbow Mountain summit; waterproof jacket (rainy season); sun hat and sunglassesstrong sunscreen (UV extreme at 5,100 m); refillable water bottlecamerapersonal medicationspassport (required at Machu Picchu); credit cards plus 300–500 Peruvian soles cash for markets, tips, horseman tip, and small purchases. The horse and saddle are provided — no riding gear needed.

Bring 400 to 700 Peruvian soles (USD 110 to 190) per person for the 5-day package. Covers: tips for the guides and drivers (suggested 10% of tour price); tip for the Rainbow Mountain horseman (suggested S/40–60 — they walk alongside the horse for the entire 2–3 hour ascent); shopping at Pisac market and the San Pedro market in Cusco; additional drinks at mealscocktails or wine at restaurants; museum entrances not in the Boleto Turístico; taxi rides within Cusco for free-time exploration. Cusco has ATMs; Rainbow Mountain trailhead and Aguas Calientes have limited or no ATMs.

For high season (May to September): book 2 to 3 months in advance. Machu Picchu entrance tickets have daily caps (5,600 high season, 4,500 low) and Premiere-tier hotels in Cusco and Aguas Calientes book up quickly. For peak weeks (last week of July, all of August): book 3 to 4 months ahead. For shoulder season (April, October): 1 month is sufficient. For low season (November to March, excluding holidays): 3-4 weeks ahead works. For the 5-star upgrade at hotels like Belmond Monasterio (Cusco) or Sumaq (Aguas Calientes): book 4-6 months ahead in any season.

Cancellations 30 or more days before tour start: 80% refund (20% retained for non-refundable Machu Picchu entrance, Vistadome train, and hotel deposits already paid). Cancellations 15–29 days before: 50% refund. Cancellations less than 14 days before: non-refundable, but rescheduling within 12 months is possible subject to availability and any rate differences. If we cancel due to force majeure (strikes, road closures, train suspensions, weather emergencies, government closures), you receive a full refund or free reschedule. Travel insurance covering trip cancellation is strongly recommended — the package includes multiple non-refundable components.

Different service tiers. The Belmond Hiram Bingham package uses the ultra-luxury Belmond Hiram Bingham train, 5-star Belmond hotel stays, and represents the highest premium tier in our Machu Picchu catalog. It typically does NOT include Rainbow Mountain. The 5 Day Premiere uses the Vistadome train (excellent but not ultra-luxury), 4-star Premiere-class hotels, and includes Rainbow Mountain by horse — representing excellent value at the upper-middle tier with broader destination coverage. Belmond is for travelers wanting the absolute pinnacle of MP experience; Premiere is for travelers wanting comprehensive regional coverage with quality.

Choose the 5 Day Premiere if any apply: (1) you don’t want to camp or trek for multiple days; (2) you have mobility concerns or want comfortable hotel accommodations every night; (3) you’re traveling with children, seniors, or family members of mixed fitness levels; (4) you have approximately 5 days available and want to maximize coverage of the region’s highlights including Rainbow Mountain; (5) you want Cusco + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu + Rainbow Mountain without choosing between them; (6) you prefer comfort and predictable schedules with the horseback advantage at Rainbow. Choose a trek option (Inca Trail, Salkantay, Lares) if you specifically want the challenge of reaching Machu Picchu on foot through the Andes.

Seven concrete reasons our 5 Day Premiere stands out: (1) Most comprehensive coverage — Cusco + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu + Rainbow Mountain, all the region’s icons in one package. (2) Optimal pace — 5 days balances coverage and acclimatization without exhaustion. (3) Premiere service tier — upgraded hotels, Vistadome train, private transfers. (4) Rainbow Mountain horseback access — makes the iconic 5,100 m destination accessible to all fitness levels. (5) Built-in flexibility — acclimatization Day 1, recovery descents Days 4–5. (6) No demanding trek physical requirements — accessible for travelers of all fitness levels. (7) Same operator quality across all components — single point of contact, consistent service standards, our 5.0/850 review average. This is our most-booked Machu Picchu package for first-time visitors, families, and seniors.
