One of the biggest highlights of the Chuspiyoc hike is how close it is to Cusco while still feeling completely off the beaten path. In just a few hours, you can experience a mix of natural beauty and ancient history that many travelers miss.
You’ll explore hidden archaeological sites such as Inkilltambo, an impressive Inca complex with terraces and water channels, as well as smaller temples and ceremonial areas along the trail. The route also offers beautiful viewpoints where you can take in the Andean landscape and enjoy a different perspective of Cusco’s surroundings.
Another highlight is the trail’s tranquility. Unlike more popular hikes, Chuspiyoc remains relatively uncrowded, allowing you to walk at your own pace and fully enjoy the environment. It’s perfect for those who want a more relaxed and authentic experience without the crowds.
The Chuspiyoc hike is considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for most travelers with a basic level of fitness. The trail is not overly steep, but there are some gradual uphill sections and uneven paths that require comfortable walking shoes and a steady pace.
Since the hike takes place at high altitude (around 3,700 meters / 12,000 feet), you may feel slightly out of breath, especially if you’ve just arrived in Cusco. For this reason, it’s recommended to do this hike after at least a day of acclimatization.
Overall, this is a great option if you’re looking for a short and manageable hike that still offers rewarding views and cultural sites. It’s ideal for beginners, families, or anyone who wants to enjoy the Andes without a physically demanding trek.
If you’re looking for a short and meaningful experience near Cusco, the Chuspiyoc hike is one of the best hidden alternatives to the more crowded routes. It offers a perfect balance between nature, history, and accessibility, all within just a few hours.
Unlike popular tours that attract large groups, this hike takes you to quieter trails where you can enjoy the landscape without distractions. You’ll explore lesser-known Inca sites, walk through peaceful valleys, and experience a more authentic side of the region.
Another advantage is the convenience. With a short travel time from Cusco and a manageable distance, this tour fits easily into your itinerary, whether you’re acclimatizing or simply looking for a half-day adventure.
This experience is ideal for travelers who value authenticity over crowds, and for those who want to discover something different without going too far or hiking for an entire day.
This tour is perfect for travelers who want a light hike near Cusco, families looking for a safe outdoor activity, and visitors who are still adjusting to the altitude. It’s also a great choice if you’re short on time but still want to experience both nature and Inca history in a single trip.
The Chuspiyoc hike can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time to go is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, you’ll find clearer skies, better trail conditions, and more consistent weather, which makes the experience more comfortable and rewarding.
Mornings are usually the best time of day to start the hike. The air is fresher, visibility is better, and you’ll have a higher chance of enjoying uninterrupted views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Afternoon departures are still a good option, especially if you prefer a quieter atmosphere or softer light for photography.
If you’re visiting during the rainy season (November to March), the landscape becomes greener and more vibrant, but trails can be muddy and weather conditions less predictable. Even then, the hike remains accessible, as long as you come prepared with proper footwear and rain protection.
Overall, this is a flexible half-day experience that can easily fit into your itinerary at any time of the year, with each season offering a slightly different perspective of the Andean landscape.
The Chuspiyoc hike takes place at high altitude, reaching around 3,700 meters (over 12,000 feet). While the trail itself is not physically demanding, the elevation can make the hike feel more challenging, especially if you’re not yet acclimatized.
It’s recommended to spend at least one full day in Cusco before doing this hike. This allows your body to adjust to the altitude gradually and helps reduce the chances of discomfort such as headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath.
During the hike, it’s important to walk at a steady pace, stay hydrated, and take short breaks when needed. There’s no need to rush—the experience is meant to be enjoyed slowly while taking in the scenery.
Light meals, good rest, and avoiding alcohol before your hike can also make a noticeable difference. Many travelers find that herbal teas, like coca or muña, help them feel more comfortable at altitude.
With a bit of preparation and the right mindset, most visitors can complete the Chuspiyoc hike without any issues and fully enjoy the experience.
At 9:00, we start the walk near the Wayllarcocha wetlands, a downhill walk with slight ascents. Visit the temple of Chuspiyoc, the temple of the moon of Cusco, Kallachaka, and end the adventure in the vicinity of the Salineras neighborhood within the district of San Sebastian.
The Inca ruins of Chuspiyoc have an outcrop of natural rocks; the Incas molded the great stone in the shape of an alchemist looking at the sunrise. Above the Chupiyoc temple is a water source with a stepped Inca path to descend the rock and reach the central part of Chupiyoc.
The Inca ruins of Chuspiyoc also have attractive Inca-style door and window structures for practical use and ancestral rituals. Other water sources and hydraulic water channels with a beautiful system of terraces are also present, and finally, there is a dry lake with a great dam.
Continuing with the tour through the mystical paths of CHUSPIYOC, discover the underground temple of offerings to mother nature, the sacred Inca cross, the altar of the two infinity-shaped serpents, and the temple of the Inca trilogy, “sacred icons of two pumas, snakes, and condors.”
