A half-day hike to Chuspiyoc’s carved shrine and the Temple of the Moon near Cusco.
Chuspiyoc doesn’t look like much from a distance — a natural rock outcrop on a quiet hillside outside Cusco. Get closer, and the Inca’s carving work reveals itself: a stone shaped into a figure the site’s own legend describes as an alchemist watching the sunrise, an underground chamber for offerings to Pachamama, an altar carved with two serpents locked in an infinity shape, and a shrine dedicated to the Inca trilogy — puma, serpent, and condor, the three sacred animals representing the Andean cosmos.
This half-day hike opens at Chuspiyoc, continues to Cusco’s own Temple of the Moon, and passes briefly through Inkilltambo and Kallachaka — two sites covered in far more depth on our dedicated Inkilltambo trek — before closing near San Sebastián.

The hike opens at the Wayllarcocha wetlands, a short drive from Cusco, before a mostly downhill walk with gentle ascents toward Chuspiyoc itself — a natural rock outcrop the Inca carved directly into a ceremonial shrine. Local tradition describes the site’s central stone as an alchemist figure gazing toward the sunrise; nearby, a stepped Inca pathway descends into the rock toward an underground chamber understood as a space for offerings to Pachamama. Elsewhere at the site, an altar carved with two serpents locked in an infinity shape and a shrine dedicated to the Inca trilogy — puma, serpent, and condor, the three sacred animals of Andean cosmology — round out what’s genuinely one of the more symbolically dense sites near Cusco.

This hike instead treats them as waypoints on a longer route that closes near the Salineras neighborhood within San Sebastián.
This hike opens at its highest point — Chuspiyoc, at 3,713 m — and works generally downhill from there, with gentle ascents along the way, closing near San Sebastián at a lower elevation.
The drive heads toward the Wayllarcocha wetlands, roughly 18 minutes from Cusco, where the walking portion begins.

Both pass through Inkilltambo and Kallachaka, but this hike treats them as shared closing stops after opening at Chuspiyoc, rather than the main destination.
