The Journey Through the Andes

The journey to Colca Canyon is much more than reaching a viewpoint — it’s a gradual immersion into the landscapes of the high Andes. Whether departing from Puno or Arequipa, the route itself becomes part of the experience, offering wide-open plains, volcanic peaks, traditional villages, and wildlife along the way.

• A brief stop at a local restaurant along the route, where you can use the facilities, enjoy a warm cup of coca tea, and have breakfast if you wish.
• Scenic viewpoints overlooking the Colca Valley, where you’ll see impressive agricultural terraces that have shaped the canyon’s landscape for centuries.
• Cruz del Condor, the most iconic lookout point in the canyon and the best place to observe Andean condors soaring above the cliffs.
• When time allows, additional scenic stops may include:
  • Patapampa Volcano Viewpoint, offering panoramic views of surrounding snow-capped peaks.

Route from Puno

Departing from Puno, the drive begins across the Altiplano, passing through Mañazo and the peaceful waters of Laguna Lagunillas. As the road climbs higher, you’ll notice the scenery shifting from open highland plains to dramatic mountain views.

The route continues toward Patapampa, the highest point of the journey, before descending into the Colca Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through Chivay and traditional villages such as Yanque, Coporaque, and Maca before arriving at the iconic Cruz del Condor viewpoint.

After visiting the canyon, the journey continues toward Arequipa.

Route from Arequipa

From Arequipa, the road gradually ascends into the Andean highlands, with a stop near Patapampa, where sweeping views of surrounding volcanoes stretch across the horizon.

The descent into the valley leads through Chivay and the traditional towns of Yanque, Coporaque, and Maca before reaching Cruz del Condor, the most famous lookout point in the canyon.

At the end of the visit, the return journey follows the road toward Puno.

Important: This full-day service operates as a round-trip from your departure city. Travelers starting in Arequipa return to Arequipa, and those departing from Puno return to Puno.

The duration of the journey varies depending on your departure city:

• From Puno to Cruz del Condor: approximately 5 hours (338 km / 210 miles)
• From Arequipa to Cruz del Condor: approximately 4 hours (207 km / 129 miles)
