Day 1: Cuzco Arrival and the Sacred Valley Transfer Service

Upon your arrival time at Cuzco airport, we are waiting for you with our tourist transport, which takes us to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After half an hour of bus ride we get to Chinchero. Depending on your arrival time in Cusco, we may have time to stop at a Inca textile center or the Chinchero Incan site, or maybe even visit both places.  We stay for a while at this nice little Inca and Colonial town to  help with the adaptation to the high altitude.  By choosing this tour, you are able to avoid staying at the high altitude of Cusco, until later when you have become better acclimatized to the high altitude. On this first day we go and stay overnight at Urubamba or another town in the Sacred Valley of the Incas which are at a lower altitude than Cusco.

Day 2: Pisac, Salineras, and Moray Tour

At 8:30 am we pick you up from the hotel. In one hour we arrive at Pisac Incan site, the site of a temple. There are many Inca citadels around Pisac, which are located in the Mountains which offer natural protection. At Pisac we visit the main Incan places trekking from the upper side and finishing at the lower site of Pisac. During this two hour tour, we have views of the spectacular Andes and Inca architecture.

Then we return to Urubamba village for a buffet lunch. After lunch we keep exploring the Andes of Machu Picchu. The next place we visit is Moray where we will have a short hike. This giant ring-shape terrace was used to plant crops including experimental ones. The Incas developed many types of potatoes and other edible crops. Additionally, the Incas were always studying Pachamama (Mother Nature) so that is why they were prepared with sufficient food in storage for 90 years.

The last place to visit is Salineras “Inka salt mine of Maras” with more than 3,000 pans in a ring shapes. At this site we try to understand why salt rather than sugar was so important to the Incas. In Inca mythology, salt was an important factor, as well as a required product for all Incas who were always walking and needed the salt minerals.

After our Salineras visit we have a group decision whether to return from the salt mines by car to the hotel or enter and visit the salt pans and then carry on using the old trail to the riverside (a one hour downhill trek). If we choose the latter, at the Kondor tourist transport will be waiting for us to take us back to the hotel.

The large luggage is left at the hotel reception, and for Machu Picchu we carry with us just a small day backpack or really small luggage. After a short transport ride we arrive at Yanahuara village, where we visit some of the Inca bars. We also visit the Inca and Colonial houses to play Sapo, take pictures of Guinea pigs, and explore the traditional Peruvian kitchen. There we can learn about the natural process of how to process  Inca beer using fermented corn. We also get to drink some of the two types of beer: one sour and the other mixed with strawberry. After this tasting experience, we travel to Ollantaytambo.

Ollantaytambo is built close to two rivers, the Urubamba Main River and Patacancha River (small one). The water was and is very important to the population of the area. Even today, the water is fresh and clean. Ollantaytambo was also a temple dedicated to the astronomical gods such as the Sun, Moon, Mountains, totemic animals like the Alpaca, and contains numerous warehouses with many Inca altars (the milky way projection). The Inca astronomer saw in the milky way those symbols which were used to build Ollantaytambo.

At noon or early afternoon, we take the train service to Aguas Calientes village, a small town with only two main streets (one street with the train track), and the other which leads from the Plaza upper side towards the hot spring. No taxi service, all by foot here.
